About the Project

The Water Towers Landscape (WTL) is one of the three terrestrial landscapes identified as a priority area in WWF Tanzania’s Conservation Strategic Plan (CSP III, 2025–2030). It encompasses the Eastern Arc Mountains and Eastern African coastal forests, which are recognized as globally important biodiversity hotspots with high levels of species endemism.

The East Usambara Restoration Project (EURP) is a four-year programme focused on the East Usambara coastal forests sub-landscape of the Water Towers Landscape. The project uses innovative and multiple landscape restoration approaches aimed at improving human wellbeing, ecosystem services, wildlife conservation, and people’s livelihoods.

WWF Tanzania is seeking a Project Executant with strong experience in managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects in nature conservation and demonstrated experience in community engagement and restoration projects.

Job Overview

The Project Executant will coordinate the overall implementation of the East Usambara Restoration Project, including engagement with implementing partners.

The role involves substantial interaction with:

• Central and Local Government authorities
• National Government Authorities
• Private sector organizations
• National and local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
• Community-Based Organizations (CBOs)
• Research institutions
• Local communities

The Project Executant will serve as a key resource person for project implementation, annual work planning, technical progress reporting, project risk management, budget and expenditure tracking, and timely delivery of project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Project Implementation and Coordination

• Implement the East Usambara Restoration Project and prepare monthly updates, quarterly reports, and annual technical progress reports.
• Develop annual project work plans, budgets, fund advance requests, and concept notes.
• Ensure smooth cooperation with WWF Switzerland, project staff, and other parties to achieve project activities and objectives.
• Manage field budgets and allowances for stakeholders and partners within approved budgets.
• Develop high-quality field stories and databases.
• Undertake project monitoring and evaluation in collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and Communications Officer.
• Ensure compliance with WWF internal policies and external requirements.
• Support proposal development for other projects within the Water Towers Landscape.
• Make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and professional judgment.
• Manage personal performance through training and career development with support from the WWF Tanzania Country Office Forest Coordinator.
• Ensure effective performance management of the Project Field Officer.
• Supervise and guide field implementing partners, including participating villages.
• Ensure the project adheres to WWF Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) procedures developed for the Water Towers Landscape.
• Undertake any other duties assigned by the Forest Programme Coordinator and Water Towers Landscape Lead.

Stakeholder Engagement

The position requires effective engagement and coordination with government institutions, WWF network offices, NGOs, CSOs, private-sector organizations, research institutions, implementing partners, and local communities.

The successful candidate should be able to establish and maintain strong relationships with Government, NGOs, CSOs, private-sector organizations, and community partners.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Social Sciences, Environmental Science, or another related field.
• A Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
• At least five years of relevant professional experience in:
  • Natural resources management
  • Forest landscape restoration
  • Community-based conservation projects
  • Coordinating and facilitating trainings and meetings
• Strong knowledge and understanding of the theory behind Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR).
• Strong understanding of Climate Change and the application of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for impactful restoration and community benefits.
• Understanding and sensitivity to the cultural, gender, religious, racial, age, and livelihood contexts of rural coastal communities in Tanzania.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to travel regularly, stay in project areas for periods of time, and travel at short notice.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills in both Kiswahili and English.
• Ability to develop strong relationships with government institutions, NGOs, CSOs, private-sector organizations, and community partners.
• Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Strong networking aptitude and ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
• Very good command of English and excellent report-writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
