About AIRD

The African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-political, non-religious, and non-profit organisation providing technical and operational support in areas including supply chain, logistics, and infrastructure. AIRD works in collaboration with relief and development partners, including UN agencies, international donors, national organisations, and governments, particularly in disaster-affected, poverty-stricken, and development-focused areas.

Job Summary

The Driver will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of assigned project vehicles for authorised official duties. The role requires strict adherence to AIRD fleet policies, UNHCR regulations, occupational safety and health requirements, and Tanzanian traffic laws.

The Driver will also be responsible for accurate mileage and trip records, fuel control, vehicle documentation, vehicle maintenance, and the safe transportation of passengers and cargo.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate the assigned vehicle for authorised official missions.
• Ensure vehicles are used strictly for authorised trips, passengers, and cargo.
• Transport cargo in accordance with approved mission orders, waybills, and dispatch instructions.
• Maintain accountability for vehicle mileage, fuel consumption, and overall vehicle condition.
• Accurately complete vehicle logbooks and Smart Fleet trip records.
• Properly handle, secure, and protect cargo during loading, transportation, and offloading.
• Ensure mission orders, waybills, delivery notes, and handover documents are properly completed and signed.
• Ensure vehicles are serviced according to fleet maintenance schedules and report faults promptly.
• Plan routes based on road conditions, accessibility, weather, and safety considerations.
• Maintain accurate fuel records and vehicle documentation.
• Drive professionally to prevent damage to vehicles, cargo, infrastructure, and the environment.
• Comply with Tanzanian traffic laws, organisational fleet policies, and safety standards.
• Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor or Fleet Management.

Driving and Fleet Operations

• Provide passenger and cargo transportation for authorised official missions.
• Follow Tanzanian traffic laws, road safety regulations, and defensive driving practices.
• Avoid unauthorised trips, route deviations, fuel siphoning, and use of unapproved garages.
• Accurately record destinations, mileage, fuel consumption, and the purpose of each trip.
• Use the assigned official phone responsibly and remain reachable during official duties.

Vehicle Care, Maintenance and Fuel Control

• Regularly clean the interior and exterior of the assigned vehicle.
• Conduct daily and periodic vehicle inspections, including checks on:
  • Oil
  • Water
  • Brakes
  • Brake fluid
  • Tyres
  • Battery
  • Lights
  • General vehicle condition
• Report mechanical faults and maintenance requirements promptly.

Reporting and Incident Management

• Immediately report accidents, incidents, vehicle damage, loss, or theft of vehicle parts or fittings, including minor incidents.
• Cooperate with investigations and insurance or police procedures when required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Clean driving record and proven knowledge of Tanzanian traffic laws.
• Valid driving licence in Class C, C1, D or E, covering heavy goods vehicles, Coasters, light vehicles, and buses.
• Valid licence verification letter issued by the relevant authority.
• At least 3 years of driving experience.
• Previous experience working with an INGO or humanitarian organisation will be an advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of Tanzanian traffic laws, road safety regulations, and defensive driving.
• Understanding of fleet management procedures, including trip authorisation, logbooks, and waybills.
• Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify early signs of vehicle faults.
• Knowledge of fuel management and consumption monitoring.
• Ability to accurately record mileage, fuel usage, and trip details.
• Familiarity with humanitarian or INGO environments, particularly field and camp settings, is preferred.
• Good communication skills in English and Swahili.
• Ability to use mobile phones and basic digital tools for official communication and reporting.
• High levels of honesty, integrity, accountability, and responsibility.
