Job Purpose
The Assistant Production Manager – Crop Protection will be responsible for safeguarding crop health and optimizing greenhouse production through effective pest and disease management, crop monitoring, and adherence to quality, safety and farm protocols.
Key Responsibilities
1. Crop Protection and Monitoring
- Lead and coordinate crop protection, pest and disease management, scouting and crop monitoring activities.
- Ensure crop health, quality and production performance are maintained.
- Monitor crops regularly to identify potential pest, disease and other crop health risks.
- Ensure emerging crop-related issues are identified, reported and escalated promptly.
2. Team Supervision and Development
- Supervise and develop crop protection and scouting teams.
- Plan and coordinate workforce activities effectively.
- Monitor team productivity, discipline and performance.
- Provide training and support to team members.
- Ensure employees comply with operational and safety standards.
3. Crop Health and Performance
- Monitor crop health and crop protection performance.
- Analyze crop monitoring information and relevant production data.
- Identify and communicate crop risks and emerging issues.
- Prepare and maintain accurate operational reports.
- Support timely decision-making based on crop monitoring results.
4. Resources and Equipment Management
- Oversee the effective use of crop protection resources, materials and equipment.
- Ensure operational resources are used safely, efficiently and responsibly.
- Monitor crop protection-related operational requirements.
- Promote proper care and accountability for equipment and materials.
5. Greenhouse Operations and Compliance
- Support the Production Manager in maintaining effective greenhouse operations.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Hygiene standards
- Health and safety requirements
- Environmental standards
- Farm protocols
- Contribute to continuous improvement of greenhouse production operations.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture or a related field.
Experience
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following:
- Crop protection
- Greenhouse production
- Pest and disease management
- Agricultural production environments
Technical Knowledge
Candidates should have good knowledge of:
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Crop monitoring.
- Pest and disease identification.
- Crop protection principles.
- Chemical safety.
- Safe pesticide handling practices.
- Occupational health and safety standards.
- Environmental standards applicable to agricultural operations.
Leadership and Management Skills
- Proven ability to supervise teams.
- Ability to coordinate workforce activities.
- Strong workforce planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain high standards of productivity and discipline.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and operational efficiency.
Analytical and Computer Skills
- Strong analytical and data management skills.
- Ability to interpret crop monitoring information.
- Ability to prepare accurate operational reports.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Ability to work with multiple relevant software systems.
- Experience with data collection, analysis and record keeping using agricultural software.
Communication Skills
- Good communication and coordination skills.
- Proficiency in English and Swahili.
