Job Summary
Absa Bank is seeking a Relationship Manager – Mining and Metals, Power & Renewables to manage and grow strategic client relationships across the Mining & Metals, Power and Renewables sectors.
The role focuses on originating and executing high-value transactions, providing sector insights and advisory services, delivering tailored banking solutions, and coordinating the bank’s capabilities to achieve client primacy, sustainable revenue growth, and industry leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Relationship Management and Thought Leadership – 10%
- Develop deep expertise in the Mining & Metals and Power & Renewables sectors.
- Monitor industry trends, commodity markets, regulatory developments, and investment opportunities.
- Produce industry insights and market intelligence.
- Represent the bank at industry events and sector forums.
- Support development of sector strategies and client coverage plans.
- Deliver agreed revenue, profitability, and return-on-capital targets for the covered portfolios.
Deal Origination and Business Development – 20%
- Identify, originate, and develop new business opportunities.
- Build a sustainable pipeline of lending, advisory, and transaction banking opportunities.
- Lead deal origination efforts for structured finance, project finance, syndicated lending, and capital raising transactions.
- Coordinate internal stakeholders to ensure successful execution.
- Research current and emerging markets and identify target clients.
- Prepare client strategies, deal pitch documents, and presentations.
- Undertake financial analysis to develop optimal funding and product solutions.
Sales and Service – 60%
- Manage and deepen relationships with clients in the Mining & Metals and Power & Renewables sectors.
- Act as the primary relationship contact for designated clients.
- Identify opportunities to expand client wallet share through lending, transaction banking, trade finance, treasury, cash management, investment banking, and risk management solutions.
- Develop and implement client coverage plans to increase revenue and strengthen relationships.
- Structure and deliver tailored financial solutions with product specialists and internal stakeholders.
- Drive sector and portfolio revenue targets through client engagement, solution selling, and pipeline conversion.
- Maintain regular contact with CEOs, CFOs, Treasurers, Project Sponsors, and Shareholders.
- Monitor client satisfaction and service quality.
- Maintain awareness of competitors, market developments, sector trends, and product innovations.
Customer Management – 20%
- Build trusted-advisor relationships with CEOs, CFOs, project sponsors, and investors.
- Support customer seminars and introduction of new products.
- Use customer feedback to contribute to the development of appropriate products and services.
- Support the Head of Natural Resources in selling complex solutions using a diagnostic approach.
- Attend customer visits with the Head of Natural Resources and/or Head of CIB.
- Develop and maintain relationships within the Natural Resources network.
- Conduct research using trade journals, broker reports, the internet, Bloomberg, rating agencies, and other sources.
Business and Risk Management – 5%
- Conduct market and industry research to facilitate lending decisions.
- Work with Corporate Credit Managers to evaluate and execute large, structured transactions.
- Contribute to change management initiatives supporting process improvements and cost reductions.
- Assess business and credit risks associated with banking products and services.
- Provide guidance on credit appetite and consult with Specialist Credit teams where appropriate.
Risk and Controls

Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Business, Commerce, Management Studies, or a related field.
- 5–8 years of relevant experience in Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Project Finance, or Relationship Management.
- Demonstrable experience in Mining, Metals, Power, Energy, or Infrastructure sectors.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally.
- Broad business and sales experience in managing relationships within Mining and Metals and Power and Renewables client segments.
- Strong understanding of corporate business and financial issues, with demonstrated application of this knowledge in a sales environment.
