Job Purpose
The Underwriting Assistant will be responsible for reviewing proposal forms, verifying client information, assessing risks within approved standards, counterchecking policy terms, and reviewing policy conditions.
The role reports directly to the Assistant Underwriting Manager.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Assist the Underwriting Manager in preparing competitive insurance premium quotations for clients and brokers.
- Prepare insurance policy documents, endorsements, and related documentation using approved wording.
- Deliver excellent customer service through timely, accurate, and professional support.
- Ensure technically correct underwriting and acceptance of risks in accordance with company standards and treaty programs.
- Collect premiums before cover attachment for bank clients unless otherwise approved.
- Issue policy documents within the required turnaround time.
- Prepare accurate premium calculations with proper cross-referencing.
- Maintain proper filing and documentation systems.
- Respond promptly to emails, phone calls, correspondence, and inquiries.
- Prioritize workflow to ensure efficient and accurate processing of transactions.
- Support achievement of monthly business targets and budgets.
- Ensure timely processing and follow-up of renewals.
- Build and maintain strong professional relationships with brokers, agencies, and other insurance market players.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to support teamwork and operational efficiency.
- Maintain proper work diaries and follow-up systems.
- Handle unusual or major risks only under guidance from the Underwriting Manager.
- Operate within the approved Delegated Authority Matrix.
- Perform any other duties assigned by management.
- Deliver performance targets as outlined in departmental and personal scorecards.
Key Performance Measures
Performance will be assessed based on:
- Claim ratios
- Renewal retention
- Turnaround times
Working Relationships
The Underwriting Assistant will:
- Report to the Underwriting Manager
- Work closely with other internal departments
- Interact with:
- Britam customers
- Insurance sector stakeholders
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with an insurance specialization
- Professional insurance qualification, preferably a CII Certificate
- 2–4 years of experience in the insurance industry
Technical and Functional Competencies
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
- Knowledge of insurance concepts
- Understanding of underwriting procedures and processes
- Technical competence in underwriting insurance risks
- Knowledge of insurance regulatory requirements
