Position: Global MEL Senior Associate
Job Overview
One Acre Fund is seeking a technically strong Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) professional to provide:
- Technical guidance
- Analytical support
- Quality assurance
across 2–3 country programs within its growth portfolio.
Countries currently include:
- Tanzania
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Ethiopia
- Nigeria
- Uganda
- Zambia
- Burundi
The role supports country MEL Leads by improving evaluation systems, strengthening analytical methods, and ensuring high-quality data-driven decision-making.
The position reports to a Senior Manager on the Global MEL Team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Country Portfolio Support
- Provide technical guidance and review for country MEL teams
- Strengthen survey tools and data collection systems
- Review questionnaire programming in CommCare or similar platforms
- Improve data quality assurance and validation systems
- Review country-level data analysis using Stata (R is an advantage)
- Quality-check reports, dashboards, and presentations
- Translate findings into actionable program insights
- Share cross-country lessons and best practices
2. Evaluation Design & Methodology
- Support rigorous evaluation designs including:
- Propensity Score Matching (PSM)
- Difference-in-Differences (DiD)
- Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs)
- Identify methodological gaps and risks early
- Develop and improve global MEL standards and analytical frameworks
- Support documentation of evaluation methodologies and tools
3. Global MEL Initiatives
- Contribute to MEL training and capacity-building initiatives
- Develop shared tools, templates, and guidance materials
- Support cross-country analytical and methodology projects
- Potentially provide analytical support to the Agroforestry portfolio
- Collaborate on tree planting and ecosystem measurement approaches
- Conduct peer review for cross-country MEL workstreams
Qualifications
Analytical & Technical Skills
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Advanced proficiency in Stata
- R programming skills (preferred)
- Experience with:
- PSM
- DiD
- RCTs
- Strong analytical rigor and reproducibility practices
Survey & Data Systems
Required experience includes:
- Mobile survey programming
- CommCare experience (preferred)
- Data quality assurance systems
- Back-check survey design
- Automated data validation processes
Education & Experience
Applicants should have:
- Minimum 3 years of professional MEL or applied research experience
- Experience in international development
- Master’s degree in:
- Economics
- Applied Statistics
- Agricultural Economics
- Related field
Preferred:
- Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Experience with smallholder agricultural programs
Domain Knowledge
Strong preference for candidates with:
- Agricultural MEL experience
- Knowledge of:
- Yield estimation
- Adoption surveys
- Income measurement
- Agroforestry or tree-planting program experience
- Forest ecosystem measurement experience
Communication & Collaboration
Requirements include:
- Professional fluency in English
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to explain technical findings to non-technical audiences
- Collaborative and coaching-oriented mindset
- Willingness to travel regionally (10–25%)
Additional advantage:
- Professional fluency in French, especially for DRC-related work
