Purpose of the Role
The Underground Shift Supervisor is responsible for:
- Coordinating underground mining activities on a daily basis
- Allocating resources, machinery, and personnel effectively
- Ensuring production targets in the mine plan are achieved
- Maintaining safe and efficient underground operations
The role ensures operational control, safety compliance, and workforce supervision across active mining areas.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all mining operations are conducted safely
- Report safety issues promptly to management
- Enforce compliance with mining Acts and regulations
- Ensure duty of care for employees, contractors, and visitors
- Promote individual accountability for safety and health
Production Planning & Coordination
- Plan daily mine production targets
- Organize crews and allocate shifts and resources
- Conduct daily planning and toolbox meetings
- Coordinate operational execution according to mine plans
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise underground crews and shift teams
- Provide guidance on day-to-day site operations
- Ensure proper induction of new staff
- Monitor performance and productivity of employees
- Conduct performance appraisals and reporting
Training & Development
- Oversee training of shift personnel
- Conduct theory and practical assessments
- Mentor and motivate employees
- Support continuous skills development
Contractor & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with contractors and ensure coordinated operations
- Communicate effectively with employees and site management
- Support resolution of operational challenges on shift
Incident & Risk Management
- Submit incident reports promptly
- Identify hazards and implement risk mitigation measures
- Ensure compliance with safety systems and procedures
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Minimum 10 years’ underground experience in mechanised hard rock mining
- At least 5 years in a supervisory role
- Leadership or management development training
Technical & Operational Knowledge
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Drilling and blasting knowledge
- Understanding of mining equipment and productivity
- Knowledge of mine planning and optimization
- Familiarity with explosives and mining regulations
- Ability to assess risks and implement controls
Certifications & Licenses
- Valid Tanzanian driver’s license
- Senior First Aid Certificate
Additional Skills
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to assess employee performance
- Strong understanding of statutory mining regulations
- Ability to manage both human and equipment resources effectively
