Position Summary
The Extension Officer – Sorghum will be responsible for driving sustainable sorghum production in the Dodoma Region by supporting farmers to achieve optimum yields, quality standards, and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing strategy.
The role focuses on farmer mobilization, agronomic support, sustainable farming practices, productivity improvement, and supply chain development.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Farmer Mobilization and Registration
- Mobilize, recruit, and register sorghum farmers within the assigned region.
- Maintain updated records of participating farmers and production areas.
Agronomic Support
- Ensure timely implementation of:
- Land preparation
- Planting
- Weeding
- Harvesting activities
- Promote adherence to recommended agronomic practices.
- Ensure implementation of:
- Soil fertility management
- Moisture conservation techniques
- Crop rotation practices
Seed and Input Management
- Ensure farmers use only certified sorghum seed supplied by the company.
- Verify acreage and determine input requirements.
- Monitor proper seed rates during planting.
- Ensure timely and correct application of:
- Herbicides
- Fungicides
- Insecticides
Crop Monitoring and Technical Advisory
- Monitor crop performance throughout the production cycle.
- Provide technical guidance and extension support to farmers.
- Identify and address:
- Pest infestations
- Disease outbreaks
- Other crop abnormalities
- Recommend corrective and preventive measures.
Mechanization and Technology Adoption
- Promote mechanized farming practices.
- Encourage the use of:
- Planters
- Threshers
- Other modern agricultural equipment
- Disseminate improved farming technologies and best practices.
Farmer Business Development
- Support farmers in managing agriculture as a profitable business.
- Assist with recovery of agricultural inputs advanced to farmers.
- Strengthen farmers’ business management and productivity skills.
Data Management and Reporting
- Maintain accurate databases covering:
- Seed distribution
- Seed uptake
- Planted acreage
- Crop yields
- Prepare and submit timely monthly reports.
- Report on sustainability and field activities.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must possess:
Education
- Bachelor of Science (Honours) in:
- Agronomy; or
- Related Agricultural Field.
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in:
- Agronomy
- Agricultural Extension Services
- Farmer Support Programs
Additional Requirements
- Experience working with:
- Smallholder farmers
- Commercial farmers
- Knowledge of sorghum production systems will be an added advantage.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Fluency in English.
- Knowledge of Kiswahili will be an added advantage.
