Job Purpose

The Credit Origination Officer is responsible for reviewing, recommending, and facilitating the credit sanctioning process while monitoring the bank’s credit portfolio. The role involves assessing customer creditworthiness, managing credit risk, ensuring compliance with lending policies and regulations, and supporting business growth through sound credit decisions.


Key Responsibilities

Credit Assessment and Analysis

  • Assess customers’ creditworthiness and overall credit risk.
  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations of both existing and new-to-bank customers.
  • Analyze individual and business credit applications.
  • Prepare credit recommendations aligned with the Bank’s Risk Acceptance Criteria.
  • Ensure lending decisions achieve optimal risk-adjusted returns.

Client Visits and Relationship Management

  • Conduct pre-sanction visits to customer business premises and offices.
  • Verify business existence, operations, and sustainability.
  • Discuss business performance, challenges, and growth prospects with clients.
  • Provide technical guidance and support where necessary.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships to support credit decisions.

Credit Portfolio Monitoring

  • Monitor the performance and quality of the credit portfolio.
  • Identify early warning signals of potential credit deterioration.
  • Recommend and implement remedial actions to mitigate risks.
  • Ensure overdraft facilities are renewed before expiry dates.
  • Work closely with underwriting and collections teams to improve loan performance.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Identify, measure, and manage credit risk across on-balance-sheet and off-balance-sheet assets.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Bank risk policies
    • Internal procedures
    • Regulatory requirements
    • Statutory obligations
  • Maintain adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Turnaround Time (TAT) requirements.

Credit Administration

  • Prepare and issue:
    • Offer letters
    • Advice letters
    • Credit-related documentation
  • Provide information and reports to:
    • Management
    • Credit Committee
    • Board of Directors
  • Support stakeholders with assigned departmental tasks.

Product Development Support

  • Participate in product development initiatives.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations during post-implementation reviews.
  • Assist the Manager in identifying market trends and improving end-to-end credit processes.

Educational Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Accounting
    • Finance
    • Business Administration
    • Economics
    • Or a related field

Experience Requirements

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in a Credit Department.
  • Experience in:
    • Retail Lending
    • SME Lending
    • Credit Analysis
    • Credit Monitoring
