Position Overview
The Packer Mechanic is responsible for providing mechanical maintenance and repair support within the factory to optimize the efficiency and performance of cigarette-making machines.
The role includes carrying out production support activities, machine installation, repairs, and preventive maintenance, whether performed directly by the factory or through third-party contractors.
Key Responsibilities
Production Support and Machine Operations
- Execute and support activities aimed at achieving production objectives, including:
- Production volume
- Product quality
- Operational efficiency
- Waste reduction
- Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
- Operate machinery according to technical manuals and operational procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) standards and production procedures.
Operational Continuity
- Fulfill the responsibilities of Operators and Service Operators during:
- Vacations
- Breaks
- Training sessions
- Meal periods
- Other operational absences
Equipment Maintenance
- Monitor machine downtime and waste levels.
- Take corrective actions to minimize downtime and production losses.
- Perform maintenance and repair activities according to established plans.
- Troubleshoot and resolve equipment failures promptly.
- Implement and monitor actions to achieve spare parts utilization targets.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete all required production and maintenance records.
- Ensure accurate data entry into:
- QIMS
- SDE
- Shift Handover Logbook
- SDM Inputs, including:
- PM Cards
- Defects
- CL
- CIL
- MP&S Tasks
- Maintain records for production performance, product quality, and traceability.
Environment, Health and Safety (EHS)
- Understand workplace environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- Identify hazards and maintain effective control measures.
- Participate in EHS training programs.
- Follow safety signs, warnings, procedures, and instructions.
- Demonstrate safe working behavior at all times.
- Report accidents, near-miss incidents, unsafe conditions, and unsafe behaviors.
- Assist in eliminating workplace hazards within the scope of responsibility.
Compliance and Quality
- Ensure compliance with:
- EHS Policies
- Energy Management Policies
- Quality Management Systems
- Operational Standards
- Local labor and workplace regulations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
Experience and Skills Required
Experience
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a production or manufacturing environment (an added advantage).
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of SAP systems.
- Intermediate knowledge of SAP production processes.
- Advanced understanding of production machinery and mechanical systems.
- Advanced product and process knowledge.
- Operational knowledge of:
- Quality Management Systems
- Pest Management
- Environmental, Health and Safety Systems
- Machine Maintenance Systems
Language Requirements
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
