Job Summary

The Micro-SME Relationship Officer is responsible for driving business growth within the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Micro-SME) segment in line with the Bank’s policies, procedures, and strategic objectives.

The role focuses on business development, customer relationship management, portfolio growth, product development, and risk management while ensuring sustainable growth and quality of the Micro-SME portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

1. Business Growth

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective Micro-SME customers.
  • Serve as the Bank’s primary contact for Micro-SME clients.
  • Support branches in identifying and negotiating business opportunities to achieve annual business targets.
  • Organize customer engagement initiatives including:
    • Customer forums
    • Focus group discussions
    • Workshops
  • Identify customer needs and strengthen customer loyalty and retention.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to promote the growth of the Micro-SME business.
  • Manage sales leads through the entire sales pipeline from prospecting to contract maturity.
  • Participate in developing business processes, procedures, and operational workflows.
  • Support the Manager – Micro-SME Lending in mobilizing and managing guarantee funds to strengthen loan security.
  • Assist branches in credit appraisal and loan structuring in accordance with Bank policies.
  • Review the loan portfolio and recommend corrective actions to maintain portfolio quality.
  • Support branches in mobilizing deposits from Micro-SME customers to achieve retail liability targets.
  • Benchmark the Bank’s products against competitors and recommend product improvements.
  • Identify and nurture emerging business opportunities across all branches.
  • Monitor Micro-SME loan portfolio quality and ensure it remains within acceptable risk levels.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

2. Product Development

The officer will:

  • Work closely with the Product Team to improve existing Micro-SME products.
  • Participate in developing new products tailored to Micro-SME customer needs.
  • Support product launches and staff training.
  • Monitor product performance and recommend improvements.
  • Review product pricing to ensure market competitiveness.
  • Develop and maintain the Micro-SME product catalogue.

3. Risk Management

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Credit Unit in reviewing credit policies and lending procedures.
  • Ensure Micro-SME lending policies reflect market, regulatory, and industry developments.
  • Address risk, compliance, and audit findings relating to Micro-SME business.
  • Ensure compliance with Bank policies during all business engagements.
  • Support branches in monitoring portfolio performance and recommending corrective interventions.
  • Assist branches in monitoring compliance with loan covenants.
  • Participate in improving business operating procedures and processes.

Education Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields:
    • Finance
    • Accounting
    • Banking
    • Economics
    • Agribusiness
    • Planning
    • Business-related disciplines
    • Or another relevant field from a recognized higher learning institution.

Added Advantage

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Professional Banking Certification.

Experience Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the banking industry.
  • Experience in Micro-SME lending within a financial institution is an added advantage.
  • Strong understanding of Microfinance lending and serving customers at the base of the banking pyramid.
  • Proven ability to develop customer relationships and deliver appropriate financial solutions.
