Job Purpose
The Private Banking Portfolio Monitoring Manager is responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of the Private Banking asset portfolio by ensuring acceptable Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and Non-Performing Loan (NPL) levels, timely resolution of audit issues, and proper loan documentation.
The role also collaborates with internal departments to facilitate customer engagement activities and supports strategic initiatives that strengthen portfolio performance and customer relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Monitoring & Credit Quality
The successful candidate will:
- Lead initiatives to maintain a healthy Private Banking credit portfolio with acceptable PAR and NPL levels.
- Ensure timely resolution of audit findings and proper loan documentation.
- Work closely with branches, zones, and Head Office departments to strengthen portfolio quality.
- Monitor Private Banking loan portfolio performance and ensure it remains within approved risk thresholds.
- Conduct scheduled and event-triggered portfolio reviews to identify early warning signs and emerging risks.
- Review the performance of credit products and present findings to relevant management forums.
- Monitor agreed action plans and ensure timely implementation and closure of audit and risk issues.
- Support Relationship Managers and Senior Managers in resolving audit queries and strengthening portfolio management.
Risk Management
- Advise the Head of Private Banking on risk management matters affecting the department.
- Champion sound credit risk management practices across business processes.
- Ensure alignment of portfolio monitoring activities with the Bank’s risk management framework.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports for:
- Risk Management Forums
- Credit Committee
- Watchlist Committee
- Quality Committees
- Other management stakeholders
- Highlight portfolio performance against established credit quality indicators and recommend corrective actions.
Strategy & Business Development
- Provide strategic advice to the Head of Private Banking on portfolio monitoring and risk management.
- Recommend innovative monitoring approaches for:
- Private Banking Schemes
- Executive Loans
- Unsecured Lending Products
- Support initiatives that expand the Bank’s outreach among private sector organizations and high-value employees within government and parastatal institutions.
- Contribute to strategy development aimed at strengthening the Private Banking portfolio.
Reporting
- Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports covering:
- Portfolio quality
- Asset performance
- Credit risk indicators
- Audit issues
- Portfolio trends
- Present findings and recommendations to management for decision-making.
Leadership
- Provide motivational and inspirational leadership across the Private Banking team.
- Communicate clear performance expectations related to portfolio quality and risk management.
- Build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders to promote collaboration and continuous improvement.
Required Knowledge & Skills
Applicants should possess:
- Strong understanding of Private Banking schemes and unsecured personal lending products.
- Excellent knowledge of Tanzania’s private sector.
- Sound understanding of:
- Banking operations
- Banking regulations
- Credit procedures
- Financial markets in Tanzania
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
- Strong communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
- Leadership and people management skills.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively under pressure.
- Self-motivation, innovation, and the ability to lead change initiatives.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
- Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields:
- Business Administration
- Finance
- Accounting
- Banking
- Economics
- Business
- Or another relevant discipline.
Added Advantage
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
Experience
Applicants should have:
- Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Business Banking
- Credit Management
- Portfolio Monitoring
- Inspection
- Internal Audit
- Special Assets Management (SAM)
- Other related banking functions.
- Experience in building, leading, and developing high-performing teams.
