Job Summary

The Lead, Exploration will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering operational, logistical, procurement, and field support services required for successful execution of Greenfield Exploration Programmes across Tanzania.

Working closely with the Exploration Manager, Senior Geologists, and technical teams, the role will provide operational leadership in:

  • Logistics management
  • Procurement and supply chain activities
  • Camp operations
  • Fleet and asset management
  • Inventory control
  • Contractor coordination
  • Field programme execution

The position operates in a roster-based field environment and ensures exploration teams have the required personnel, equipment, infrastructure, and resources to achieve objectives safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.


Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership

  • Lead planning, coordination, and execution of operational support activities for Greenfield Exploration programmes.
  • Coordinate daily field operations to ensure safe and efficient delivery of approved work programmes.
  • Facilitate daily planning meetings and monitor progress against operational priorities.
  • Coordinate activities between:
    • Geology teams
    • Field technicians
    • Administration teams
    • Logistics teams
    • Contractors
  • Promote a culture of operational excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

2. Logistics, Procurement & Supply Chain Management

  • Manage logistics requirements including:
    • Transportation
    • Flights
    • Accommodation
    • Camp movements
    • Field supplies
  • Coordinate procurement of equipment, materials, and services according to approved procedures and budgets.
  • Ensure availability of:
    • Fuel
    • Water
    • Food supplies
    • Sampling consumables
    • PPE
    • Operational materials
  • Monitor supplier and contractor performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve logistics efficiency and reduce costs.

3. Field Operations & Technical Support

  • Provide operational support for:
    • Drilling programmes
    • Sampling activities
    • Site preparation
    • Access development
    • Rehabilitation programmes
  • Ensure activities comply with approved technical requirements.
  • Supervise field support teams, drivers, and geotechnicians.
  • Ensure geological teams receive required infrastructure, equipment, and logistics support.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and response exercises.

4. Fleet, Camp & Asset Management

  • Manage exploration camps to ensure:
    • Safety standards
    • Hygiene requirements
    • Environmental compliance
    • Operational readiness
  • Coordinate deployment, maintenance, servicing, and security of:
    • Vehicles
    • Equipment
    • Field assets
  • Monitor asset utilization and maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure camps and operational infrastructure meet company and legal standards.

5. Inventory & Materials Management

  • Manage inventory planning and control for:
    • Exploration equipment
    • Sampling materials
    • PPE
    • Consumables
    • Operational supplies
  • Maintain systems for:
    • Receiving
    • Storage
    • Issuing
    • Stock reconciliation
    • Disposal
  • Ensure proper management and traceability of exploration samples.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and recommend replenishment needs.

6. Leadership & People Management

  • Supervise, coach, and develop:
    • Field personnel
    • Drivers
    • Contractors
    • Technical support staff
  • Ensure employees have required competencies, licenses, and certifications.
  • Provide training on:
    • Field operations
    • Sampling procedures
    • Equipment operation
    • Quality assurance
    • Safe work practices
  • Monitor performance and implement improvement actions.
  • Encourage teamwork and collaboration among exploration teams.

7. Safety, Health, Environment & Community (HSEC)

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership across exploration activities.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • HSEC standards
    • Company procedures
    • Legal requirements
  • Conduct:
    • Field inspections
    • Pre-start meetings
    • Hazard identification
    • Risk assessments
  • Ensure implementation of:
    • SOPs
    • Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
    • Fatal Hazard Management controls
    • Fitness for Work requirements
  • Report incidents and monitor corrective actions.
  • Promote environmental protection, rehabilitation, and positive community relations.

8. Planning, Reporting & Cost Management

  • Support Exploration Manager in developing:
    • Operational plans
    • Logistics schedules
    • Resource requirements
  • Monitor expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Identify cost optimization opportunities.
  • Prepare reports covering:
    • Logistics
    • Procurement
    • Inventory
    • Contractor performance
    • Field activities
  • Maintain operational records, permits, risk assessments, and documentation.

9. Governance, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Mining legislation
    • Permits and licenses
    • Regulatory requirements
    • Company policies
  • Maintain procurement standards and financial controls.
  • Promote ethical conduct and responsible use of company resources.
  • Uphold AngloGold Ashanti’s values and Code of Conduct.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Applicants must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Geology
    • Procurement & Supply Chain
    • Material Management
    • Logistics
    • Related field

Additional technical trade qualifications are an added advantage.


Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of operational experience within the exploration industry.
  • Experience in service delivery and logistics management.
  • Experience working in remote field environments.

Knowledge & Skills Required
