Job Overview
The Operations Coach (OC) provides technical leadership and operational guidance to Bayer’s field-testing network in Tanzania.
The role involves managing breeding testing operations, ensuring accurate and timely data collection, improving team capabilities, coordinating stakeholders, and supporting research activities related to crop development.
The Operations Coach reports to the Africa Lead and works closely with AR&I (Applied Research & Innovation) teams, Product Design & Development teams, customer-facing units, and farming partners.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Field Operations
- Lead strategic planning and prioritization of field-testing operations.
- Manage Tanzania’s breeding testing network activities.
- Establish processes to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely product performance data.
- Optimize testing sites and trial management processes.
- Coordinate:
- Planting activities
- Trial management
- Data collection
- Harvest operations for maize trials
Team Coaching & Development
- Train and develop permanent and temporary staff.
- Build team capabilities through coaching and knowledge sharing.
- Support teams to work effectively through 90-day improvement cycles.
- Promote collaboration and continuous learning.
- Transfer best practices across teams.
Data Management & Analysis
- Ensure high-quality research data collection and reporting.
- Perform data quality checks against organizational targets.
- Extract, analyze, and interpret:
- Phenotyping data
- Operational performance data
- Use insights to improve research activities and operational efficiency.
- Utilize data reporting and visualization platforms.
Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the main contact for:
- Product Design & Development teams
- Customer-facing teams
- Support functions
- Partner farmers
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders.
- Align activities with customer and business objectives.
Budget & Resource Management
- Manage project budgets and capital forecasting.
- Support financial planning and budget utilization control.
- Manage capital projects and local community relationships.
Safety, Compliance & Quality
- Ensure compliance with SSHE (Safety, Security, Health and Environment) procedures.
- Promote a culture of:
- Safety

- Ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate policies.
- Support Freedom to Operate (FTO) requirements for field activities.
Equipment & Technology Management
- Maintain knowledge of technical advances in agricultural research.
- Work with equipment and supply providers to improve efficiency.
- Develop operational, maintenance, and calibration standards for research equipment.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in:
- Agronomy
- Plant Breeding
- Agriculture
- Or related field
Professional Experience
Candidates should have:
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a field-testing environment.
- Experience in agricultural research or crop production operations.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Crop production
- Crop protection
- Farming practices
- Agricultural equipment management
- Knowledge of:
- Statistical programs
- Experimental design principles
- Strong data management and analytical skills.
- Ability to organize, analyze, and present research data.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
