Job Purpose

The Brewing Lab Specialist is responsible for managing and coordinating brewing quality control and ensuring that quality assurance (QA) analyses are conducted in accordance with AB InBev standards and specifications.

The role focuses on maintaining laboratory quality systems, ensuring data integrity, supporting brewing operations, and developing laboratory team capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Management

  • Contribute to the development of quality systems for the brewery.
  • Provide expert advice and recommendations on laboratory quality processes.
  • Implement new or revised quality systems and ensure laboratory teams have the required competencies.
  • Maintain the functional and data integrity of quality systems.
  • Identify and resolve quality-system problems.
  • Ensure quality objectives are incorporated into individual and team goals.
  • Audit compliance with quality systems across laboratory and shift-based production teams.
  • Exercise budgetary control over asset-care requirements for brewing and utilities plants.
  • Liaise with the Central Office on quality matters.
  • Participate in regional and divisional management and development teams.

Quality Control & Laboratory Analysis

  • Check and verify that laboratory team members conduct required quality checks and analyses correctly.
  • Ensure accurate recording of laboratory results in the appropriate systems.
  • Verify that quality systems are functioning effectively.
  • Maintain data integrity and accuracy of laboratory information.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment operates optimally.
  • Identify equipment problems and improvement opportunities.
  • Implement changes to analytical standards following COT requirements.
  • Provide additional training where necessary.
  • Adapt COT standards to regional requirements where applicable.
  • Participate in COT management and development teams to address regional requirements and complexities.

Team Leadership

  • Lead the laboratory team and promote ownership, empowerment, and teamwork.
  • Ensure team members understand and follow operational, quality, and process standards.
  • Ensure compliance with work instructions, calibration schedules, and performance targets.
  • Mentor, support, and coach laboratory team members.
  • Conduct training needs analysis and support employee development.
  • Conduct one-on-one sessions and performance reviews.
  • Initiate corrective actions where training gaps are identified.
  • Drive performance management practices.
  • Lead the development and review of team goals.
  • Exercise budgetary control over the laboratory.

Safety & Housekeeping

  • Ensure proper safety and housekeeping procedures are followed.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and occupational safety requirements.
  • Implement applicable AB InBev/SAB and legislative safety policies, including the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and audits.
  • Correct unsafe work practices promptly.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Microbiology, or an equivalent qualification.
  • 3–6 months of on-the-job training.
  • 2–3 years of experience in laboratory, brewing, or packaging operations.
  • Strong analytical expertise.
  • Ability to apply management principles involving planning, organising, leading, and controlling.
  • Strong numerical skills, including budgeting and statistical analysis.
