Job Overview
Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an Auto Electrician to join its team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, diagnosing, and inspecting electrical systems on mining equipment while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and equipment maintenance standards.
The role requires practical experience in mining auto-electrical maintenance, including air-conditioning systems, preventive maintenance, fault finding, and repairs on mining equipment such as SANDVIK, CAT, and NORMET machines.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Follow safe work practices and attend mandatory safety courses and meetings.
- Use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report incidents and accidents promptly.
- Comply with Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental, and other company policies.
- Conduct task risk assessments, including JHA and FLRA.
- Identify and immediately act on unsafe acts or conditions.
- Conduct safety inspections and identify potential hazards.
- Follow OEM repair procedures and all safety and training protocols.
Auto Electrical Maintenance
- Maintain and repair electrical systems on various mining machines.
- Perform electrical diagnostics and fault finding.
- Conduct routine inspections of mining equipment.
- Maintain mobile equipment in a safe and cost-effective condition.
- Complete breakdown and preventive maintenance work orders on time.
- Create subsequent maintenance notifications and provide feedback on completed work.
- Develop and manage equipment component change-outs and rebuilds where required.
- Investigate and implement new technologies that can improve auto-electrical maintenance.
- Complete required training modules under the auto-electrical and maintenance skills matrix programme.
Equipment & Workshop Maintenance
- Perform basic mechanical fitting, rubber lining, scaffolding, and rigging work when instructed.
- Clean equipment and work areas using appropriate tools and cleaning materials.
- Clean, maintain, repair, and rebuild mechanical parts and components as directed.
- Remove defective parts using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
- Inspect parts and components for defects.
- Conduct regular inspections of plants and steel structures.
- Maintain equipment, parts, and supply inventories.
- Monitor stock levels and coordinate equipment and parts requirements with the supervisor.
Teamwork & Reporting
- Coordinate activities within the assigned unit.
- Report activities and issues to the supervisor.
- Document and communicate completed work, irregularities, and outstanding requirements.
- Conduct effective shift handovers.
- Support departmental tactical plans and overall business objectives.
- Assist in developing training programmes for the national workforce.
- Participate in competency assessments.
- Eliminate wasteful practices and ensure maintenance targets are achieved.
- Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- Secondary education.
- Technical/vocational education, apprenticeship, or on-the-job training.
- Relevant qualification such as:
- FTC
- VETA
- IMTT Trade Test
- Equivalent technical qualification
- Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.
- Certification in air-conditioning systems repair.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mine auto-electrical maintenance.
- Experience in the mining industry is essential.
- Good knowledge of auto-electrical maintenance planning and scheduling.
- Working knowledge of equipment safety standards.
- Practical experience with maintenance practices and techniques.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing air-conditioning systems is required.
