Job Purpose

The Reinsurance Manager will provide technical reinsurance support to ensure NCBA Insurance effectively manages risk exposure, obtains appropriate treaty and facultative protection, and maintains financial stability.

The role involves developing, placing, servicing, monitoring, and renewing reinsurance programmes while ensuring compliance with underwriting requirements, contractual obligations, regulatory expectations, and internal governance standards.

The position also supports reinsurance accounting, claims recoveries, reporting, documentation, and timely settlement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Reinsurance Technical Support & Placement

  • Assess policies and portfolios to determine reinsurance requirements and retention levels.
  • Recommend appropriate risk-transfer solutions.
  • Analyse underwriting data, exposures, and loss history.
  • Recommend suitable treaty and facultative reinsurance arrangements.

2. Reinsurance Operations, Accounting & Reporting

  • Ensure timely execution, renewal, documentation, and system setup of reinsurance agreements.
  • Maintain accurate treaty parameters and records.
  • Record and reconcile reinsurance premiums, claims, commissions, and related balances.
  • Maintain complete records of ceded and assumed reinsurance contracts.
  • Prepare contractual, regulatory, and management reports.

3. Claims Recoveries & Servicing

  • Coordinate claims notifications and supporting documentation with reinsurers and brokers.
  • Follow up on claim settlements and reinsurance recoveries.
  • Track recoveries and ensure timely recognition and reconciliation with Claims and Finance.
  • Escalate disputed or delayed recoveries.
  • Support timely resolution of recovery issues.
  • Support reinsurance-related reserving and unearned premium considerations.

4. Audit & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Reinsurance treaties
    • Underwriting guidelines
    • Delegated authorities
    • Internal policies
    • Applicable regulations
  • Maintain complete documentation and audit trails.
  • Support governance and audit readiness.
  • Monitor insurance and reinsurance market and regulatory developments.
  • Advise management on relevant regulatory and market implications.

5. Stakeholder Service & Collaboration

  • Maintain effective relationships with reinsurers, brokers, and other market stakeholders.
  • Provide technical reinsurance support to internal teams.
  • Collaborate with:

  • Support efficient processing and resolution of reinsurance matters.

Academic & Professional Qualifications

Academic Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in any of the following or a related discipline:

  • Insurance
  • Actuarial Science
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Business

Professional Qualifications

  • Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, AIIK, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Reinsurance-specific training is an added advantage.
  • Membership in good standing of a relevant professional body, where applicable.

Required Work Experience

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in general insurance and reinsurance.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a senior specialist, supervisory, or managerial position.

  • Proficiency in insurance core systems, spreadsheets, and data tools used for exposure, accumulation, and performance analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Kenyan insurance and reinsurance regulations, governance requirements, financial controls, and relevant international market practices.
