Job Purpose

The Volunteer – Epidemiologist Assistant will assist in coordinating project activities, including planning, implementation, review, and reporting.

The role will support coordination with the Ministry of Health (MoH), partners, and other stakeholders in strengthening data management, utilization, and use across supported regions in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

The position will also provide mentoring to surveillance officers on Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) activities, strengthen alert desk management in Kagera, Kigoma, and Mwanza, and support implementation of regional EBS plans.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate implementation of Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) activities in collaboration with MoH, PORALG, and partners.
  • Provide technical assistance in reviewing and developing National IDSR and EBS guidelines, SOPs, and training materials.
  • Participate in the National Surveillance Technical Working Group as an expert.
  • Support implementation of EBS at national and subnational levels.
  • Strengthen linkages between Indicator-Based Surveillance and Event-Based Surveillance systems.
  • Maintain regular communication with relevant MoH departments, regional and district health management teams, and project partners.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure planned activities are implemented effectively.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with EBS partners.
  • Conduct epidemiological data analysis and interpretation.
  • Communicate epidemiological findings to surveillance officers at regional, district, and facility levels.
  • Strengthen the capacity of surveillance officers in data analysis, interpretation, and use of epidemiological information.
  • Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual project planning.
  • Coordinate project planning with MoH and other EBS partners.
  • Prepare quality project activity reports, internal Amref reports, and donor reports.
  • Submit reports within required timelines.
  • Maintain project databases and filing systems.
  • Participate in developing project proposals for resource mobilization through solicited and unsolicited funding opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Management or an equivalent field.

Experience & Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of developing scientific papers and conducting epidemiological surveys.
  • Expertise in busy epidemiological settings.
  • Experience handling disease outbreaks and other Public Health Events of International Concern.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong computer skills, including:
    • MS Word
    • MS Excel
    • MS PowerPoint
    • MS Access
    • Internet and browsing tools
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Knowledge and skills in Event-Based Surveillance (EBS).
  • Strong knowledge of public health and related disciplines.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and mentor health and non-health personnel.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with government and health-sector stakeholders.
