Job Purpose

The Manager, Remedial Management will be responsible for monitoring the bank’s loan portfolio, identifying credit-risk concerns, analysing portfolio trends, and recommending appropriate remedial actions.

The role focuses on managing sub-performing and non-performing loans, including loan workout, restructuring, rescheduling, rehabilitation, enforcement, collateral realization, and other loan remediation strategies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Management – 40%

  • Maintain loan book quality within prescribed provision/impairment and PAR levels.
  • Work with business teams to recover watch-listed accounts.
  • Ensure effective loan remediation processes in accordance with the bank’s credit policies.
  • Develop and recommend loan workout strategies that reduce credit risk and maximize returns.

2. Customer Management – 20%

  • Handle customer queries and complaints professionally and within agreed SLAs.
  • Review repayment challenges and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports on portfolio performance and high-risk accounts.
  • Identify market conditions and trends that could affect the bank’s loan portfolio.
  • Support Business and Credit Analysis teams with relevant portfolio information.

3. Internal Business Processes – 25%

  • Ensure credit files for defaulted accounts are complete and updated.
  • Conduct scheduled site visits to assess businesses and collateral.
  • Coordinate delivery of demand notices where required.
  • Organize and coordinate weekly portfolio review meetings.
  • Recommend loan rescheduling and restructuring, including revised repayment terms.
  • Work closely with Business, Credit Analysis, Credit Approvals and Credit Operations teams to resolve problematic loans.
  • Maintain complete and secure documentation for all facilities under loan remediation.
  • Participate in relevant committees, including:
    • Management Credit Committee
    • Recovery Subcommittee
    • Weekly Remedial Portfolio Review meetings
  • Maintain up-to-date loan remediation policies, guidelines and operating procedures.
  • Develop reporting systems for monitoring remedial portfolio activities.
  • Support branch capacity building through training and guidance on remediation and recovery.
  • Recommend underperforming facilities to the Manager, Recoveries for further collection and recovery action.
  • Work with Internal Audit and Compliance on relevant compliance matters.
  • Identify opportunities to improve remedial processes and respond to emerging credit-risk trends.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Head of Remedial and Recoveries.

4. Learning & Growth – 15%

  • Set and achieve personal development goals.
  • Monitor team performance through regular reviews.
  • Ensure at least 50 hours of learning/training annually for self and direct reports through internal, external and e-learning programmes.
  • Support continuous branch training on loan remediation and recovery practices.

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honours) from a recognized university.

Professional Training

Candidates should have training or professional development in:

  • Lending
  • Debt Collection
  • Credit Monitoring

Required Experience

  • At least 5 years of banking experience in credit.
  • At least 3 years of experience in one or more of:
    • Collections and recovery
    • Portfolio analysis
    • Credit risk management
  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory and compliance requirements, particularly in supervising and managing foreclosure processes.
