JOB OBJECTIVES
The Chief Credit Officer is responsible for safeguarding the Bank’s credit risk assets by establishing a secure, flexible, and effective credit management framework.
The role ensures:
- Protection of the Bank’s credit portfolio through effective risk management practices.
- Compliance with regulatory requirements and credit risk guidelines within the country.
- Development and implementation of sound credit policies, procedures, and controls.
- Maintenance of a high-quality loan portfolio that balances risk and profitability.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Credit Policy & Governance
- Supervise the development of clear credit policy guidelines, procedures, and process manuals aligned with the Bank’s credit policies and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of credit policies.
- Communicate policy changes, process improvements, and credit initiatives across the Bank.
- Ensure compliance with internal and external credit regulations to protect the Bank from sanctions.
2. Credit Risk Management
- Maintain a high-quality credit portfolio based on internationally accepted risk rating models.
- Ensure credit facilities are adequately secured and generate appropriate returns relative to accepted risks.
- Utilize credit management software to ensure compliance throughout the credit lifecycle, including:
- Target Market Definition
- Credit approval and extension
- Credit utilization
- Ongoing monitoring
- Recovery and collection processes
- Identify causes of credit failures and share lessons learned across the Bank to prevent recurrence.
- Implement approved sanctions against officers responsible for credit policy violations or credit-related failures.
3. Credit Team Management & Development
- Ensure Credit Officers execute assigned responsibilities effectively and in accordance with approved procedures.
- Promote credit awareness across the Bank through periodic training, assessments, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Supervise activities of the following functions:
- Credit Analysis, Structuring & Product Programmes
- Credit Administration, Monitoring & Reporting
- Recovery and Remedial Management
- Ensure effective delegation, performance management, and development of credit teams.
4. Credit Administration & Portfolio Monitoring
- Ensure high credit administration standards through proper:
- Documentation
- Archiving systems
- Reporting mechanisms
- Monitoring processes
- Ensure timely responses to internal and external queries within agreed turnaround times.
- Ensure effective monitoring of loan performance and early identification of credit risks.
- Support development of product programmes that meet market needs while protecting the Bank’s interests.
5. Recovery & Remedial Management
- Oversee recovery strategies for distressed and non-performing loans.
- Ensure effective remedial actions are implemented to minimize credit losses.
- Monitor recovery performance against approved targets and budgets.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
Performance will be measured based on:
- Timely responses to internal and external credit-related queries.
- Effectiveness of credit policies and processes in reducing loan defaults.
- Net recoveries versus approved budget.
- Percentage of non-performing loans (NPLs) compared to total approved loans.
- Number of recurring audit exceptions.
- Credit processing and approval turnaround time.
- Minimization of loan loss provisions.
- Compliance with internal and external credit policies.
- Level of customer satisfaction.
- Overall quality and profitability of the credit portfolio.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline.
- Advanced qualifications are compulsory, including one or more of the following:
- MBA
- MSc
- MA
- ML
- Relevant Professional Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant banking experience; or
- 15 years of related non-banking experience.
Experience should include:
- Credit risk management.
- Loan structuring and approval.
- Portfolio management.
- Banking operations.
- Credit recovery and remedial management.
