Job Overview

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a leading African health research organization involved in developing, testing, and validating health innovations. IHI is seeking a qualified Clinical Officer to support clinical trial activities at its Bagamoyo office.

The successful candidate will support patient care, diagnostic procedures, participant management, and clinical research activities while ensuring compliance with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and regulatory requirements.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Trial Support

  • Support clinical trial site preparation and ensure compliance with:
    • Study protocols
    • SOPs
    • Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
    • Regulatory requirements
  • Screen, recruit, enroll, and follow up study participants according to approved research protocols.
  • Obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Collect clinical data and maintain accurate study documentation.
  • Respond to study-related queries and support trial operations.

Clinical Procedures & Patient Management

  • Perform clinical procedures including:
    • Blood sample collection
    • Sample labeling
    • Sample handling
    • Sample processing
  • Monitor, document, and report:
    • Adverse Events (AEs)
    • Serious Adverse Events (SAEs)
  • Ensure proper participant care throughout the study period.

Research & Community Engagement

  • Participate in community engagement activities to support:
    • Participant recruitment
    • Participant retention
  • Contribute to:
    • Research reports
    • Scientific presentations
    • Publications
    • Training of junior staff

Compliance & Team Support

  • Ensure adherence to ethical standards, GCP, and study procedures among research team members.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Project Leader or Principal Investigator.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience in clinical research activities.
  • Proficiency in:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Data entry
    • Records management
  • Strong time management skills to meet project timelines.
  • Leadership and management skills, including:
    • Meeting coordination
    • Conflict resolution
    • Team support
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to handle feedback and minimize workplace conflicts.
  • Good documentation and communication abilities.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine or a related health field.

Professional Requirements

  • Current Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
  • Experience working with clinical trials is required.

Language Requirements

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in:
    • English
    • Swahili
