Objective of the Role

The role is responsible for designing, planning, and optimizing drilling and blasting operations within an open-pit mining environment to ensure:

• Safe blasting operations
• Efficient rock fragmentation
• Cost-effective mining processes
• Compliance with safety and environmental standards

The engineer will create blast patterns and timing sequences that support efficient:

• Loading
• Hauling
• Crushing operations

while protecting pit wall stability and minimizing operational risks such as:

• Fly rock
• Excessive vibration
• Air blast impacts

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

Drill & Blast Planning

• Design drill and blast patterns according to approved standards
• Monitor compliance with drill and blast standards
• Review blast data from:
  • Production drilling
  • Explosive loading
  • Blasting activities

---

Quality Assurance & Monitoring

Coordinate and review QA/QC activities including:

• Blast vibration monitoring
• Fragmentation analysis
• Video camera assessments
• Diggability analysis
• Dilution and ore loss assessments

---

Project & Operational Support

• Participate in drill and blast improvement projects
• Prepare monthly drill and blast data reports
• Monitor:
  • Powder factors
  • Explosives usage
  • Consumable usage against budget

---

Safety & Incident Management

• Support investigations involving:
  • Misfires
  • Fly rock incidents
  • Excessive blast vibration events
• Apply workplace health and safety procedures
• Ensure compliance with explosive handling regulations

---

Cost Control & Performance

• Conduct drill and blast cost planning
• Reconcile operational performance against plans and budgets

---

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering
• Valid Blasting Certificate (mandatory)

Added advantage:

• Valid Tanzania driving license with ability to drive a manual light vehicle (LV)

Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Candidates should have:

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a large open-pit mining environment
• Proficiency in:
  • Vulcan software
  • ShotPlus design software
  • BlastIQ systems
• Strong understanding of:
  • Explosive handling
  • Storage regulations
  • Advanced blasting techniques
