Job Purpose

The Estate Agriculture Director is responsible for developing the estate’s cane supply and agricultural strategy to support long-term growth, sustainability, and operational excellence. The role ensures agricultural production is managed within budget while achieving optimal yield, quality, and cost efficiency.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop long-term cane supply strategies, agricultural plans, and yield forecasts.
• Review and update agricultural strategies periodically to ensure continued growth and sustainability.
• Prepare annual agricultural operational plans covering crop establishment, husbandry, harvesting, and crop removal.
• Drive innovation and adoption of new agricultural technologies.
• Ensure compliance with conservation legislation and sustainable agricultural practices.
• Build and develop a strong leadership team through coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
• Lead performance management initiatives, recognizing high performance and addressing performance gaps.
• Promote operational excellence by maximizing yields while maintaining optimal cost and quality.
• Ensure implementation of group standards and best practices in:
  • Crop Production
  • Agronomy
  • Engineering
  • Harvesting and Haulage
  • Cane Supply and Optimization
• Collaborate with group teams to identify and implement operational improvements.
• Manage relationships with key stakeholders and third-party suppliers.
• Develop business cases for capital investment projects and ensure successful implementation.
• Identify and manage agricultural risks using approved mitigation systems.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing, best practices, and continuous improvement across the organization.
• Oversee talent development and performance management within the department.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, including:
  • SHERQ
  • Competition Law
  • Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC)
• Ensure systems and processes are in place to support operational success.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Development, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in sugar cane agriculture.
• At least 5 years in a senior agricultural operations role managing more than 3,000 hectares.
• Proven experience in developing and implementing agricultural strategies while managing budgets, people, and resources to achieve business KPIs.
• Strong agricultural expertise with the ability to anticipate and respond to industry changes.
• A formal business or commercial qualification is an added advantage.
• Strong agricultural data analysis capability.
