Job Summary
The Extension Officer: Barley will be responsible for supporting farmers in the Northern region to achieve consistent, high-quality barley production. The role focuses on farmer mobilization, agronomic support, crop monitoring, adoption of improved farming practices, and ensuring barley production meets the company’s sourcing strategy requirements for yield, quality, and supply.
Key Responsibilities
Farmer Mobilization and Support
- Mobilize, recruit, and register barley farmers within the assigned region.
- Support farmers throughout the production cycle.
- Coach farmers on managing farming operations as sustainable and profitable businesses.
- Promote adoption of improved agricultural technologies and farming practices.
Crop Production Management
- Ensure land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting activities follow recommended agronomic practices.
- Ensure proper soil fertility management, moisture conservation, and crop rotation practices.
- Ensure farmers use only certified barley seeds supplied by TBL at the correct seed rate.
- Verify farm acreage and determine input requirements for assigned areas.
- Monitor crop performance throughout the growth cycle.
- Identify pests, diseases, and crop abnormalities and provide timely recommendations.
- Ensure proper application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides according to recommended rates.
Technology and Mechanization Promotion
- Promote the use of agricultural machinery including:
- Planters
- Threshers
- Harvesting equipment
- Disseminate improved barley production technologies among farmers.
Data Management and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Farmer information
- Input distribution
- Planted acreage
- Crop yields
- Prepare and submit monthly production and sustainability reports.
- Use digital tools to capture farmer agronomic and non-agronomic data accurately.
Financial Support Activities
- Assist in the recovery of input costs advanced to farmers.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have:
- Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Agronomy or a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in agronomy or agricultural extension services.
- Experience working with barley production is an added advantage.
- Experience working with commercial and smallholder farmers.
- Knowledge of barley production systems is an added advantage.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Swahili is highly advantageous.
