About the Position

Northern Engineering Works Ltd (NEWL) is seeking a skilled and dedicated Field Technician to join its Operations team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out standardised site preventive and corrective maintenance, as well as generator servicing, in accordance with the agreed Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Key Responsibilities

The Field Technician will be responsible for:

  • Adhering to Standard Day Requirements.
  • Attending daily cluster meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Following site access procedures.
  • Executing site preventive maintenance in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Properly maintaining client and NEWL assets.
  • Ensuring 100% DC power availability at assigned sites.
  • Attending callouts within the required Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR).
  • Ensuring all assigned sites are visible at the NOC.
  • Ensuring all assigned Site Work Orders (SWOs) are closed within SLA timelines.
  • Ensuring all alarms are properly terminated and configured at sites.
  • Ensuring diesel generators (DGs) are maintained according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
  • Ensuring air-conditioning units are properly maintained in accordance with the SLA.
  • Maintaining high data integrity in ServiceNow.
  • Conducting site earth measurements.
  • Attending scheduled training programmes.
  • Maintaining the assigned portable DG.
  • Ensuring the portable rectifier is properly kept at GMT.
  • Submitting detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports for corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Maintaining sites and company assets with a high level of integrity.
  • Maintaining strong partnerships with clients.
  • Ensuring site fire extinguishers are properly maintained according to the SLA.
  • Ensuring all Remote Monitoring Systems (RMS) are communicating properly.
  • Ensuring Fuel Delivery Work Orders (FDWOs) and LUKU activities are closed according to SLA requirements.
  • Ensuring preventive maintenance activities are completed according to plan.
  • Taking proper care of SLA spares and consignment stock.
  • Ensuring the GMT store is well maintained.
  • Requesting replenishment of SLA spares on a daily basis and maintaining the required maximum stock level.
  • Training and mentoring Field Trainees.
  • Requesting skill-set enhancement or training in a timely manner.
  • Performing any other tasks assigned and deemed necessary for successful delivery of the job.

SHEQ Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Ensure SHEQ compliance in all assigned tasks.
  • Report identified near misses, hazards, and SHEQ non-conformities to the NEWL SHEQ Manager.
  • Report at least five (5) near misses and one (1) hazard every month.
  • Ensure no planned work is undertaken without preparation and communication of a Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA).
  • Report any incident or property damage within 24 hours.
  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure a Journey Management Plan is completed when driving more than 150 km or 3 hours.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
  • Attend mandatory OSHA medical examinations.
  • Report accidents promptly.
  • Cooperate with the SHEQ team during occupational incident and accident investigations.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • A Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of proven experience in the telecommunications industry.
  • EWURA registration.
  • ERB registration.
  • Driving skills and a valid driving licence.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal teams and external customers.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and project management reporting tools.
  • A proactive, innovative, and assertive approach to work.
  • Self-reliance in managing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  • A valid driver’s licence and clean driving record.
  • Familiarity with proper installation procedures for power infrastructure and reticulation at BTS sites.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assignments within given instructions, prescribed routines, and accepted standard practices.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various field locations.

  • Availability for 24/7/365 standby duty is essential.
