Job Description

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is seeking a Financial Compliance Officer to provide highly specialized finance and accounting-related services to the Africa Region business unit, particularly in financial compliance.

The position is responsible for ensuring that audit, taxation, return filing, regulatory compliance, and other financial and operational requirements across the region are met. The successful candidate will provide expert support in areas including audit coordination, taxation, accounting, management controls and reporting, compliance certification, and other financial management activities.

The position may be based at TNC’s Arusha, Cape Town, or Nairobi regional office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and properly managed for compliance.
  • Lead and coordinate external, internal, country, donor, tax, statutory, and government regulatory audits.
  • Ensure audit activities are conducted accurately and within required timelines.
  • Monitor the completion of corrective action plans and ensure submissions are made in accordance with applicable local laws.
  • Act as the lead person for audit engagements, including planning and managing auditors.
  • Guide audit implementation and support the development and signing of audit reports.
  • Provide audit and financial preparation support to the Africa Region by reviewing financial statements and audited reports.
  • Promote and monitor a complete audit-trail culture in supporting documentation for financial transactions.
  • Maintain a register of audit recommendations arising from financial audits.
  • Follow up on audit recommendations and track their implementation until closure.
  • Identify financial compliance risks and challenges and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Lead and support regional and country programs in implementing financial compliance solutions.
  • Work with management to plan and conduct regular transaction-processing reviews, control reviews, fraud allegation reviews, and compliance assessments.
  • Analyze review results and provide recommendations.
  • Reinforce consistency in the application of organizational financial policies and procedures.
  • Conduct periodic spot reviews to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Support the review of accounting transactions, including journal entries and adjustments, in accordance with internal guidelines.
  • Ensure appropriate procedures and supporting documentation are maintained for accounting entries and adjustments.
  • Ensure tax and statutory filings, regulatory compliance requirements, regulatory certifications, and internal financial certifications are completed on time.
  • Liaise with regional accounting vendors, Operations Administrators, and Finance Specialists on audits, tax and regulatory filings, and financial compliance certifications.
  • Maintain current knowledge of local government finance requirements and ensure alignment with tax and other legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide advisory support and training to staff and partner organizations on financial compliance matters, including:
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Tax and statutory requirements
    • Regulatory matters
    • Updates to accounting and reporting frameworks
  • Collaborate with World Office Finance, Audit, Technical Accounting, and Compliance teams as well as regional leadership.
  • Support the implementation and strengthening of financial systems and continuous process improvement.
  • Participate in finance initiatives rolled out to international business units, including ERP and accounting-process improvements.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, with at least 4 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with relational databases, particularly Microsoft Excel, and accounting packages.
  • Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Strong technical command of spreadsheet programs, general ledger reports, and other financial management tools.
  • Experience supporting multiple projects across different locations and/or countries.
  • Experience with government regulations relating to the not-for-profit sector, taxation, reporting frameworks, grants, and contracts.
  • A professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CIA, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in auditing and taxation matters.

  • Technical expertise in complex accounting and financial matters.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Driver’s License Requirement

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program.

Employment in this position is contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee’s motor vehicle record.

Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned or leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of TNC if classified as high-risk drivers under the organization’s Auto Safety Program.
