Objective of the Role

The Geologist 1 – UG Mine Geology will support the implementation of the Gold Mine Underground Mine Geology operational strategy to deliver the budget in line with the strategic option and Life of Mine plan.

The role will also:

  • Ensure compliance with site HSE policies, protocols and standards within underground geology activities.
  • Provide geological support to underground mining planning and production.
  • Optimize ore recovery and minimize ore dilution.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety and Team Leadership

  • Assist the Senior Geologist in communicating and implementing ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 objectives and targets to underground geology junior staff.
  • Ensure Geological Technician 3 personnel conduct toolbox meetings and communicate HSE site systems, policies, protocols and standards.
  • Drive adherence to underground geology SOPs and ensure all geology tasks are conducted in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Conduct safety leading indicators and ensure team adherence to TAKE 5, pre-starts, JSA, RSA, workplace inspections, safety stoppages and caught-in-act activities.
  • Implement the training matrix and training needs analysis for underground geology technicians.
  • Support career and skills development in line with business requirements.
  • Lead underground geology junior staff and ensure delivery of core production requirements.
  • Conduct and assess individual performance reviews for underground geology technicians.

Drilling and Grade Control

  • Oversee and forecast drill rig movement and ensure planned drill sites are aligned with forecast movement.
  • Provide drilling update reports to the UG Senior Geologist and identify risks that may affect delivery against plan.
  • Coordinate with UG Technician 3 to ensure timely delivery of geological sections for completed rings.
  • Escalate foreseeable risks and benefits as grade control drilling progresses.
  • Visit drilling programmes weekly and monitor contractor compliance with site HSE standards.
  • Monitor daily contractor drilling performance and prepare weekly and monthly drilling reports.
  • Monitor drilling quality and ensure compliance with AngloGold Ashanti QAQC protocols.
  • Manage drilling costs through effective rig utilization, assessment of achievable penetration rates and cost per metre.
  • Advise the Senior Geologist on drilling improvement actions.
  • Update and monitor the monthly drilling accrual report.
  • Provide strategic drill forecasts within weekly and three-month mine planning by project to support mining plans.

Geological Mapping and Modelling

  • Ensure underground development mapping and sampling programmes are conducted and properly interpreted.
  • Ensure geological level maps are generated and validated.
  • Ensure geological models are generated from mapped level plans.
  • Communicate geological models to relevant stakeholders to reduce delivery risks against the mine plan.
  • Participate effectively in stope note meetings to support the correct assignment of tonnes, grade, density and geomet parameters to released final stope designs.
  • Monitor stope performance and request CMS in a timely manner for stope analysis.
  • Ensure stope analysis is completed on time.
  • Evaluate overbreak and communicate available tonnes and grade to mining engineers and production teams for ore classification and ROM tracking.

Production Reconciliation and Ore Management

  • Establish recovery factor tracking for mine planning.
  • Develop a functional team capable of capturing and reporting mine production physicals for ore mined versus planned.
  • Manage stockpile balances and rehandle transit stockpiled ore to the main ROM.
  • Conduct weekly underground geology production reconciliation reports.
  • Assess actual performance of active development and stopes against mining designs.
  • Manage satellite ROM ore material and assess assignment of material within the respective finger.
  • Keep the UG Senior Geologist informed of variances to plan and foreseeable risks to sustainable operations.

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Geology.

Experience

  • At least 3–5 years of experience working in underground mining geology operations.
  • Background in mine geology and exploration.

Knowledge and Skills

Candidates should have:

  • Understanding of HSE legal requirements.
  • Broad understanding of underground mine geology operations and their role in achieving production objectives and targets.
  • Understanding of cross-functional working relationships involving mine planning, mining operations, geotechnical, process plant, finance and HR.
  • Knowledge of drilling methodologies, sampling, assaying and QAQC.
  • Knowledge of grade control processes, grade control model review and reconciliation.
  • Knowledge of the mine-to-mill reconciliation chain.
  • Sound understanding of business unit value drivers.
  • Ability to make sound and timely decisions by gathering facts and establishing action priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High energy, commitment and enthusiasm for the work.
  • High personal goals for both individual and team performance.
