Job Title: Heavy / Oversized Truck Driver

Location: Dar es Salaam / Various Domestic & Cross-Border Routes, Tanzania
Role Purpose
People Project Co. Limited is recruiting on behalf of a reputable transportation and logistics client with extensive experience in cargo haulage within Tanzania and across the region.
The Heavy / Oversized Truck Driver will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely operation of heavy-duty trucks and trailers used to transport cargo locally and across international borders. The candidate must have proven experience operating heavy trucks, tractor units, and oversized/abnormal-load vehicles, alongside a solid understanding of long-haul and cross-border transport operations.
General Responsibilities
Driving & Transportation

Operate heavy-duty trucks, tractor heads, and trailers safely and responsibly.

Transport cargo to designated destinations within Tanzania and across regional/cross-border routes.

Handle oversized, abnormal, bulky, containerised, or other heavy cargo as assigned.

Maintain safe driving practices throughout all journeys under varying road and weather conditions.

Plan and follow approved routes while complying with company instructions and transport schedules.

Demonstrate competence in long-distance driving and extended journeys.
Cargo Safety & Handling
-
Ensure cargo is properly secured before departure and remains secure throughout the journey.

Conduct regular checks on cargo, load positioning, tarpaulins, straps, chains, and securing equipment.

Report any damage, shortage, movement, or security concerns involving cargo immediately.

Maintain proper custody and accountability of cargo throughout assigned trips.

Follow established procedures for loading, offloading, and delivery documentation.
Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance

Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned trucks and trailers.

Inspect brakes, tyres, lights, engine fluids, steering, suspension, coupling systems, and critical components.

Report mechanical defects or safety concerns immediately to the Fleet/Workshop team.

Keep assigned vehicles clean and in good operating condition.

Ensure all required vehicle documentation and safety equipment are valid before starting a trip.
Long Distance & Cross-Border Operations

Strictly comply with Tanzanian traffic laws and applicable regional transport regulations.

Adhere to the company’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) requirements.

Never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or impairing substances.

Observe prescribed driving hours, rest requirements, and fatigue-management procedures.

Wear seat belts and required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

Report accidents, near misses, security incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.
Customer Service & Professional Conduct

Represent the company professionally at customer sites, ports, border points, and delivery locations.

Maintain clear communication and professional conduct with customers and the public.

Protect the company’s reputation through responsible driving and respectful behaviour.

Maintain confidentiality regarding company, customer, and cargo information.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications:
-
Age: 25 – 50 years.
-
Licence: Valid Class E Driving Licence.
-
Certification: Relevant professional driver training/certification from VETA and/or the National Institute of Transport (NIT).

Travel Documents: Valid passport with the ability and willingness to undertake cross-border assignments.

Route Knowledge: Strong knowledge of Tanzanian roads and major regional transport corridors. Experience in East, Central, and Southern Africa transport is a strong advantage.

Technical Knowledge: Good understanding of basic vehicle inspection and mechanical fault identification.

Fitness & Record: Physically fit for long-distance driving with a clean driving record free of serious traffic offences.

Availability: Ability to work independently, manage long trips, and spend extended periods away from home.
Experience:
-
Minimum 3 years of proven professional experience as a heavy truck driver in commercial transport, haulage, or logistics.

Demonstrable experience in long-distance heavy truck operations.
-
Experience transporting oversized, abnormal, bulky, containerised, or heavy cargo is highly advantageous.

Experience with tractor heads, trailers, flatbeds, lowbeds, interlinks, or heavy-duty combinations preferred.
