Job Overview

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking a qualified Laboratory Technologist to support malaria research and clinical laboratory activities. The successful candidate will perform laboratory testing, maintain quality standards, support research projects, and ensure compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), biosafety, and laboratory procedures.


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Sample Management

  • Perform malaria parasitology, immunology, and molecular laboratory testing according to approved protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Receive, process, document, and test clinical specimens while maintaining specimen integrity and traceability.
  • Conduct laboratory assays including:
    • ELISA
    • Intracellular cytokine staining
    • PCR
    • RT-PCR
    • qPCR
  • Perform molecular testing for malaria parasites and viral pathogens.

Data Management & Quality Assurance

  • Record, verify, and maintain accurate laboratory data and study documentation in compliance with GCLP standards.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, reagents, consumables, and specimen inventories.
  • Support laboratory quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) activities.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Biosafety procedures
    • Biosecurity requirements
    • Laboratory safety standards

Research Support & Reporting

  • Participate in the development and implementation of study SOPs.
  • Support project meetings, monitoring visits, and laboratory audits.
  • Contribute to:
    • Data analysis
    • Research reports
    • Scientific publications
    • Dissemination of research findings

Training & Team Support

  • Train and mentor junior laboratory staff on:
    • Laboratory procedures
    • GCP/GCLP requirements
    • SOP implementation
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator or Laboratory Manager.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge and experience in:
    • Immunological laboratory analysis
    • Molecular laboratory techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with clinical research teams.
  • Ability to manage workplace relationships and provide constructive feedback.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to independently manage laboratory workflows.
  • Ability to work accurately under research and clinical laboratory environments.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Laboratory Science
    • Molecular Biology
    • Immunology
    • Related scientific fields

Language Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills in both:
    • English
    • Swahili
