Job Purpose

The Manager: IMT and Cross-Border Payments is responsible for driving the growth, profitability, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance of Vodacom M-Pesa’s cross-border financial services portfolio.

The role will lead the development and execution of strategies that expand international remittance corridors, enable innovative cross-border payment use cases, strengthen partnerships with International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs), Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Banks, Fintechs, and Payment Hubs, and ensure seamless customer experiences across inbound and outbound payment journeys.

The position serves as the commercial and operational custodian of the business, balancing revenue growth, customer value proposition, partner management, treasury optimization, risk management, and regulatory compliance to position M-Pesa as the preferred cross-border payments platform.

Key Responsibilities

1. Business Growth and Strategy

  • Develop and execute the cross-border payments growth strategy aligned with M-Pesa’s financial services objectives.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities across international remittances, wallet transfers, merchant payments, and emerging payment corridors.
  • Monitor market trends, customer needs, competitor activities, and regulatory developments.

2. Operations and Transaction Processing

  • Ensure smooth end-to-end operation of cross-border payment services.
  • Monitor transaction success rates and service availability.
  • Support operational excellence across cross-border payment journeys.

3. Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure strict adherence to Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), and applicable financial regulations.
  • Monitor suspicious activities and mitigate associated risks.
  • Enforce Know Your Customer (KYC), Customer Due Diligence (CDD), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), and Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) policies.
  • Assess and mitigate operational, financial, fraud, and regulatory risks.
  • Ensure compliance with Bank of Tanzania regulations and international payment requirements.

4. Relationship Management

  • Onboard and manage relationships with International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs), payment hubs, and banking partners to grow the business.
  • Strengthen strategic partnerships with MTOs, MNOs, banks, fintech companies, and other payment ecosystem participants.
  • Develop and maintain relationships that support expansion into new international remittance corridors and cross-border payment opportunities.

5. Reconciliation and Reporting

  • Verify and reconcile daily cross-border payment transactions.
  • Manage partner accounts.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports for management.
  • Ensure accurate transaction and financial records across the cross-border payments portfolio.

Qualifications, Skills, Competencies and Knowledge

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Actuarial Sciences, Finance and Banking, or a related field.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Strong knowledge and experience in cross-border payments operations.
  • Good understanding of operational risk within the mobile money and banking sectors.
  • Good understanding of KYC, AML/CFT, particularly as they relate to the remittance business.
  • High level of responsibility and integrity.

Commercial and Technical Competencies

  • Open and fact-based approach, with the ability to understand and translate commercial objectives to technical teams.
  • Ability to ensure delivery of business requirements from campaign platforms.
  • Disciplined and detail-oriented working style, combined with the ability to operate effectively at an operational level.
  • Ability to work as a bridge between Commercial and IT, including scoping system and business requirements.
  • Ability to collaborate seamlessly with cross-functional teams and deliver results through people.
  • Strong focus on delivering tangible results based on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to manage a changing environment and keep up with new technologies while maintaining focus on operational metrics.
  • Ability to self-develop and continuously improve technical and business knowledge.
