Position Summary
Tembo Nickel is seeking an experienced Mining Manager to lead the transition of its underground mining asset from the project development phase into steady-state production.
The role initially focuses on:
- Contractor mobilization
- Boxcut establishment
- Decline development
- Mining infrastructure construction
The position then transitions into commissioning and operational leadership, overseeing:
- Ventilation shaft completion
- Backfill plant establishment
- EPCM infrastructure handovers
- Technical services development
- Underground mining operations
The Mining Manager will play a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable underground mining operations while supporting localization and workforce development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Construction Phase
The Mining Manager will:
- Lead mobilization and management of underground mining operations.
- Oversee mobilization of the underground mining contractor workforce and equipment fleet.
- Manage site establishment activities.
- Supervise construction and development of:
- Boxcut infrastructure
- Decline development
- Ventilation shafts
- Backfill plants
- Ensure all activities are executed according to project schedules and operational standards.
Commissioning & Operational Phase
Technical Services Leadership
- Establish and manage the Owner’s Technical Services Department.
- Recruit, develop, and lead teams in:
- Mine Engineering
- Mine Geology
- Surveying
Infrastructure Handover Management
- Manage interfaces between EPCM construction activities and mining operations.
- Coordinate seamless infrastructure commissioning and handovers.
- Prevent operational conflicts between construction and mining teams.
Safety & Operational Excellence
- Develop, implement, and audit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure safe underground mining and maintenance practices.
- Promote a strong safety culture aligned with company standards.
Production Planning & Scheduling
- Plan and coordinate:
- Stoping activities
- Backfilling operations
- Underground development schedules
- Take accountability for:
- Daily production targets
- Weekly production targets
- Monthly production targets
Compliance & Localization
- Enforce compliance with:
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards
- Environmental requirements
- Company policies
- Support localization strategies by:
- Developing national talent
- Transitioning operational responsibilities to Tanzanian employees
- Maintaining the project’s social license to operate
Budget & Cost Control
- Manage operational mining budgets.
- Monitor financial performance and cost variances.
- Validate contractor invoices and commercial claims.
- Implement cost-control measures to ensure operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Mining Engineering
- Or a related discipline
Knowledge & Experience
Applicants must possess:
Essential Experience
- Minimum 20 years of senior underground mining operational leadership experience.
- Extensive experience in:
- Mechanized decline development
- Underground stoping operations
- Contractor management
- Underground mine commissioning
Technical Expertise
- Strong understanding of:
- Underground mine design
- Mine planning
- Production scheduling
- Mine budgeting
- Cost control
Project & Construction Experience
- Proven experience working with:
- EPCM contractors
- Construction teams
- Infrastructure handover projects
Leadership Experience
- Experience establishing and managing Technical Services teams.
- Experience operating in remote or developing jurisdictions.
- Strong stakeholder and contractor management skills.
Commercial Skills
- Ability to:
- Analyze mining budgets
- Track operational variances
- Validate contractor claims
- Manage financial performance
