Purpose of the Position

The Nutrition Officer will provide professional technical, operational, and administrative support throughout the programming process for nutrition programmes and projects under the Child Nutrition and Development Section within the Country Programme.

The role supports the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of nutrition programme results. These responsibilities contribute to the achievement of nutrition service delivery outputs, particularly in the following areas:

  • Prevention and management of severe wasting
  • Vitamin A supplementation
  • Nutrition supply chain management
  • Community and school nutrition services
  • Nutrition in emergencies

How You Can Make a Difference

The Nutrition Officer will support UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child has the right to care by helping strengthen nutrition programmes and services in Tanzania. The role involves technical, operational, administrative, partnership, and capacity-building responsibilities that support effective nutrition programming and delivery of results.

Key Functions and Accountabilities

1. Support to Programme Development and Planning

The Nutrition Officer will support programme development and planning activities related to nutrition programmes and projects. This includes contributing to programme design, planning processes, and preparation of key programme documents and inputs.

2. Programme Management, Monitoring, and Delivery of Results

The officer will assist in programme management and monitoring to ensure timely delivery of results. This includes supporting implementation tracking, monitoring progress, identifying challenges, and contributing to reporting on programme achievements.

3. Technical and Operational Support to Programme Implementation

The role includes providing technical and operational assistance to support effective implementation of nutrition interventions. This may include support related to nutrition service delivery, emergency nutrition response, supply chain management, and community-based nutrition activities.

4. Networking and Partnership Building

The Nutrition Officer will contribute to building and maintaining partnerships with relevant stakeholders. This includes working with government counterparts, UN agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, and other actors involved in nutrition programming.

5. Innovation, Knowledge Management, and Capacity Building

The officer will support knowledge management, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives. This includes helping document good practices, support learning, strengthen systems, and build capacity among partners and stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

Education

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent first-level university degree in one of the following fields:

  • Nutrition
  • Public health
  • Nutritional epidemiology
  • Global or international health and nutrition
  • Health or nutrition research
  • Policy and/or management
  • Health sciences
  • Another health-related science field

Work Experience

Applicants must have at least two years of relevant work experience in a developing country in one or more of the following areas:

  • Nutrition
  • Public health
  • Nutrition planning and management
  • Maternal, infant, and child health/nutrition care

Skills

The following skills are required for this position:

  • Public health
  • Programme management
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Nutrition planning

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

The following will be considered assets:

  • Knowledge of another official UN language, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish
  • Knowledge of Swahili
  • Experience in health or nutrition programme/project development within a UN system agency or organization
  • Relevant country-level experience, particularly in development, fragile settings, and humanitarian contexts
