Job Description
Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking a Payroll Officer.
The Payroll Officer will be responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of employee payroll for a large-scale gold mining operation in Tanzania. The role ensures that payroll records, earnings, statutory deductions, overtime, leave, employee changes, and other payroll inputs are accurately captured, verified, and processed in accordance with company policies, Tanzanian statutory requirements, and internal controls.
The position will also support payroll reporting, audits, employee payroll queries, pension submissions, and continuous improvement of payroll processes, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
Key Responsibilities
Work with the Accounts Payable and Payroll Superintendent to:
- Review and verify payroll source documents.
- Prepare and print payroll reports covering earnings, hours worked, taxes, insurance, and leave.
- Develop, manage, and maintain comprehensive payroll records.
- Maintain a detailed annual payroll calendar of key payroll-related tasks and due dates for planning purposes.
- Verify all payroll changes, updates, and overtime entered into the payroll software system, ensuring the accuracy of the information.
- Effect change notes as required.
- Ensure that all changes to the payroll system are properly authorized.
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations and company policies.
- Ensure that all statutory and applicable deductions are captured in the payroll system.
- Ensure that employees are paid correctly and on time.
- Resolve all payroll-related complaints.
- Ensure all new employees are correctly and promptly captured in the payroll system.
- Ensure updated payroll records are timely sent to pension funds.
Internal Controls
- Institute and oversee an effective system of internal controls relating to payroll.
- Continuously check the level of compliance and communicate any weaknesses identified, together with recommendations, to the Financial Controller.
- Support effective financial controls in areas involving procurement, payments, and related financial processes.
Audit
- Respond to audit queries by providing supporting documents and requested information.
Risk Management
- Ensure risk-minimisation strategies are in place.
- Ensure all company assets are properly accounted for.
- Assist with insurance matters relating to company assets.
Education and Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Accounting and Finance.
- Qualified Accountant (CPA-T) by the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) or ACCA will be an added advantage.
Experience
- At least three years of experience in payroll processing.
- Experience handling complex payroll for not less than 300 employees, including full-time and casual employees.
Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate should have:
- Ability to work reasonably independently and resolve difficulties.
- Excellent knowledge of Group and local reporting requirements and accounting practices.
- Excellent knowledge of internal control requirements.
- Good knowledge of payroll software and computer-based financial accounting systems.
- High level of honesty and trustworthiness.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to take responsibility for adhering to company procedures.
- Ability to work with routine processes while maintaining accurate payroll outputs and meeting regular deadlines.
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude towards improving financial accounting performance.
- Ability to respond effectively to heavy demands and high work pressure.
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
Qualifications & Licences
- Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Accounting and Finance.
- CPA-T qualification from NBAA or ACCA will be an added advantage.
Additional Information
- The successful candidate should be prepared to undertake external training to complement the operation.
- The incumbent may occasionally be required to work outside normal working hours.
- The incumbent may, from time to time, be required to travel on company business.
