About the Programme

The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with BRAC International (BI), is implementing an initiative designed to create a positive and measurable impact for 1.2 million adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) across seven countries in East and West Africa, including Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.

The initiative aims to support adolescent girls and young women living in poverty through scalable economic development approaches that foster their agency and voice. Participants will have opportunities to pursue their aspirations, achieve sustainable livelihoods and engage in advocacy issues.

Job Objective

The Programme Officer Intern will gain practical, hands-on experience in the implementation of the AIM Programme.

The intern will support the delivery and follow-up of AIM programme activities, including:

  • VSLA formation.
  • Livelihood asset support.
  • Participant follow-up.
  • Education monitoring.
  • Transition to formal financial services.
  • Community engagement.
  • Programme implementation.
  • Monitoring and coordination.

Key Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Branch Manager, the Programme Officer Intern will:

  • Form and follow up VSLAs to create a savings culture among participants and support other programme activities by leveraging this platform based on the programme design.
  • Assist with conditional cash transfers of assets and cost recovery of such assets.
  • Ensure a minimum 80% transition to formal microfinance institutions for AIM livelihood participants.
  • Conduct participant follow-up through initial/immediate home visits after receiving livelihood assets, subsequent home visits and group visits to ensure asset safety and growth, increase household income and build confidence.
  • Deliver education follow-up standards for the assigned intervention school, including:
    • Quarterly attendance verification.
    • Monthly peer-mentor study circle (PLC) follow-up.
    • Annual home visit for each education participant.
  • Prepare and follow a monthly work plan that routes visits efficiently within a compact catchment.
  • Conduct approximately 16 home visits in a morning, at 20 minutes per visit, where applicable.
  • Conduct VSLA visits from Tuesday to Thursday mornings during weeks 1 and 3, with afternoon home visits close to the VSLA visited.
  • Keep Friday afternoons for the weekly branch meeting and one Friday morning each month for the school visit.
  • Achieve at least 90% completion of due home visits each month.
  • Immediately alert the Branch Manager where the portfolio exceeds 210 livelihood participants or completion falls below the required level, allowing the portfolio to be rebalanced.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

The Programme Officer Intern will:

  • Ensure the safety of team members from harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation in the implementation of project activities.
  • Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding to help establish a safe working environment.
  • Practice, promote and endorse safeguarding policies among team members.
  • Ensure safeguarding standards are implemented in every course of action.
  • Follow safeguarding reporting procedures in case of any reportable incident.
  • Encourage others to follow safeguarding reporting procedures.

Requirements

Education

Applicants should have a:

  • Graduate or Diploma qualification in Social Studies.
  • Community Development.
  • Gender and Development.
  • Human Resources.
  • Business Administration.
  • Or other related subjects.

Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in the international development sector.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities to implement community development programmes, including:
    • Education.
    • Microfinance.
    • Livelihood.
    • Agriculture.
    • Food security.
    • Girls’ and women’s empowerment programmes.
    • Other related programmes/projects.

Added Advantages

  • Experience as an AIM Club Mentor or in a comparable community facilitation or group mobilisation role.
  • Experience managing savings groups, such as VSLA or equivalent.
  • Experience with cash or asset transfers.
  • Experience with cost recovery or instalment collection.
