Job Summary

The Relationship Manager – Islamic Banking (Commercial) is responsible for driving the growth of NBC’s Islamic Banking portfolio by acquiring new customers, strengthening client relationships, and growing financing and deposit portfolios in compliance with Shari’ah principles.

The role serves as the primary commercial interface between the Bank and Islamic Banking customers while promoting NBC’s Lariba Islamic Banking products and services across Retail, SME, and Commercial Banking segments.

The incumbent may also assume operational leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Head of Islamic Banking.


Key Responsibilities

1. Business Development & Customer Acquisition (40%)

Portfolio Growth

  • Develop and implement business development plans with monthly acquisition targets.
  • Identify and acquire new Islamic Banking customers.
  • Expand NBC’s market share within the Islamic Banking segment.

Deposit Mobilization

Promote and grow:

  • Lariba Savings Accounts
  • Lariba Current Accounts
  • Lariba Investment Accounts

to achieve assigned deposit growth targets.

Islamic Financing Solutions

Structure and originate Shari’ah-compliant financing products such as:

  • Murabaha
  • Ijarah
  • Musharaka
  • Mudaraba
  • Wakala

while ensuring compliance with credit policies and Shari’ah requirements.

Market Expansion

  • Identify new market opportunities.
  • Recommend product and pricing enhancements.
  • Represent NBC at:
    • Islamic finance forums
    • Trade exhibitions
    • Community engagements
    • Business networking events

Leadership Support

  • Lead business pitches and client negotiations when delegated.
  • Support business continuity and pipeline management.

2. Customer Relationship Management & Retention (25%)

Portfolio Management

  • Manage a portfolio of Islamic Banking clients.
  • Conduct regular client review meetings.
  • Monitor renewals and business opportunities.

Customer Service

  • Handle escalated customer complaints and inquiries.
  • Ensure excellent customer experience and service delivery.

Relationship Deepening

  • Identify customer financial needs.
  • Cross-sell appropriate Islamic Banking products and services.
  • Strengthen long-term customer relationships.

Customer Retention

  • Monitor portfolio attrition.
  • Implement proactive customer retention strategies.

Service Coordination

  • Work closely with branch teams to maintain high service standards.

3. Performance Monitoring & Reporting (15%)

Business Performance Reporting

Prepare periodic reports covering:

  • New customer acquisition
  • Deposit growth
  • Financing portfolio performance
  • Revenue generation
  • Delinquency levels

Portfolio Monitoring

  • Analyze branch-level Islamic Banking performance.
  • Identify performance gaps and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor portfolio quality and repayment trends.

Market Intelligence

  • Monitor competitor activities.
  • Analyze market trends.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to management.

4. Branch Capacity Building & Team Enablement (10%)

Training & Coaching

  • Organize training sessions for branch staff.
  • Improve product knowledge and sales capabilities.
  • Support implementation of branch Islamic Banking plans.

Technical Support

Serve as an internal expert on:

  • Lariba products
  • Islamic contracts
  • Customer engagement practices
  • Shari’ah-compliant banking services

5. Shari’ah Compliance & Risk Management (10%)

Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure all customer transactions comply with Shari’ah principles.
  • Adhere to approved Fatwas and Shari’ah Advisory Council (SAC) decisions.

Risk Management

  • Identify and escalate Shari’ah compliance risks.
  • Support implementation of corrective actions.

Audit Support

  • Respond to audit queries.
  • Support internal, external, and Shari’ah audits.
  • Maintain required compliance documentation.

Governance Support

  • Assist in implementing SAC decisions.
  • Support Islamic Banking governance activities.

Educational Qualifications

Essential

Bachelor’s Degree in:

  • Islamic Banking and Finance
  • Business Administration
  • Economics
  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Related Field

Added Advantage

  • Master’s Degree in a business-related discipline.
  • Professional qualifications in Banking, Accounting, or Finance.

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in:
    • Islamic Banking
    • Commercial Banking
    • Financial Services

Required Experience

  • Business development and sales.
  • Customer acquisition and portfolio growth.
  • Relationship management.
  • Islamic Banking operations.

Islamic Finance Experience

Practical knowledge of:

  • Murabaha
  • Ijarah
  • Musharaka

Compliance Experience

  • Shari’ah risk management.
  • Shari’ah audit and review processes.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional certifications such as:

  • CIPA
  • AAOIFI Certifications
  • IFQ (Islamic Finance Qualification)
  • Other recognized Islamic Finance certifications

Additional advantages:

  • Experience in an Islamic Banking window or dedicated Islamic Banking unit.
  • Knowledge of Bank of Tanzania Islamic Banking regulations.
