Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Risk Assessment: Participate in the identification, assessment, and analysis of all risk types across the bank through quarterly and annual risk assessment discussions with each department; assist the Senior Risk and Compliance Officer in managing key risk indicators, business unit risk profiles, and risk reporting.

  • Plan Implementation: Implement the Risk and Compliance unit plan based on business objectives and high-risk areas to review and provide assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls.

  • Exposure Evaluation: Assist Senior Officers to evaluate risk and related operations to determine areas of highest exposure to maximize review coverage.

  • Monitoring & Operations: Conduct monitoring reviews of all key risk areas—including AML, KYC, Account opening, Dormant account reactivations, Agent Banking, and Mobile Banking—and communicate outcomes to the Senior Risk and Compliance Officer.

  • Independent Reviews: Carry out different review assignments independently with minimum supervision in accordance with Risk and Compliance procedures.

  • Fieldwork & Quality: Perform fieldwork assignments, execute quality reviews of tasks assigned by the supervisor, and ensure timely, acceptable quality reporting within allocated time limits.

  • Team Communication: Ensure adequate information exchange among the team and keep everyone up to date with relevant strategic developments of the Bank.

  • Liquidity & Counterparty Risk: Update and circulate liquidity forecasts to ALCO team members. Conduct counterparty risk assessments before onboarding new counterparties and monitor ongoing performance.

  • Issue Follow-up: Follow up on the closure of various issues raised in different bank reports (e.g., Audit reports and internal risk reports).

  • Compliance & Ethics: Ensure compliance with bank policies, procedures, signed investigation agreements, and independent statements.

  • Fraud Investigation: Participate in bank-wide investigations involving reported allegations of fraud, waste, embezzlement, and abuse; determine the bank’s exposure and actively recover losses.

  • Documentation & Detection: Assist the team leader to document all investigative processes. Proactively facilitate the early detection of fraud by leveraging the hotline and tip-offs.

Requirements and Baseline Skills:

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years working in a bank across functions such as credit, risk, forensics, banking services, audit, or a related field.

  • Education: At least a Bachelor’s degree, ideally with a focus on Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance/Risk Management.

  • Professional Qualifications: Certifications like Risk Management, Compliance, CPA, or CFE will be an added advantage.

  • Core Attributes: Honest individual with high integrity, independence, and professional ethics.

  • Methodological Knowledge: Substantial understanding of audit/risk management methodologies and regulatory requirements related to information security, privacy, and/or data security.

  • Task Prioritization: Ability to prioritize tasks according to their importance for SMFB’s operations and strategic goals.

  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel to customer sites and bank branches across Tanzania.

  • Growth Mindset: Ability and willingness to learn and improve continuously.

  • Prioritization: Ability to manage multiple complex priorities and competing agendas without direct authority over delivery teams.

  • Policy Application: Ability to interpret and apply policies and regulations across a large, complex business.

  • Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical aptitude with emphasis on investigative, methodical, critical questioning, and logical thinking; data-driven decision-making.

  • Interpersonal Skills: High level of interpersonal skills to interact with leaders at multiple levels and facilitate team interactions.
