Job Purpose

The RM Agribusiness Livestock Specialist will be responsible for developing, managing, and growing Equity Bank Tanzania’s livestock and livestock-related agribusiness portfolio.

The role will provide specialized management and technical support to livestock farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives, dairy groups, ranchers, pastoralist organizations, aggregators, processors, abattoirs, feed manufacturers, input suppliers, livestock traders, off-takers, and other actors across the livestock value chain.

The role holder will identify and develop quality livestock financing opportunities, build a sustainable pipeline of agricultural customers, deepen existing relationships, and facilitate access to appropriate financial products, including working capital, asset finance, agricultural loans, trade finance, deposits, transaction banking, and digital financial services.

The specialist will also serve as a technical and commercial resource on livestock value chains, providing insights on livestock production systems, animal health, feed and nutrition, breeding, market dynamics, seasonality, cash flows, pricing, value addition, and associated agricultural risks.

Key Responsibilities

1. Livestock Agribusiness Relationship Management

  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with livestock farmers, pastoralist groups, cooperatives, dairy groups, ranchers, aggregators, traders, processors, abattoirs, feed manufacturers, input suppliers, and off-takers.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of quality livestock and agribusiness customers and financing opportunities.
  • Conduct customer visits, livestock farm visits, business reviews, value chain assessments, and relationship management activities.
  • Understand customers’ livestock production models, business cycles, cash flows, financing requirements, operational challenges, and growth opportunities.
  • Develop and implement customer acquisition, retention, and portfolio deepening strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to cross-sell deposits, loans, insurance, payments, digital banking, and other relevant financial solutions.
  • Act as the primary relationship contact for assigned livestock customers and coordinate resolution of customer issues with relevant internal teams.

2. Livestock Value Chain Development

  • Develop strong technical and commercial knowledge of priority livestock value chains, including dairy, beef, poultry, goats, sheep, and other commercially viable livestock enterprises.
  • Map livestock value chains to identify commercially viable financing opportunities, gaps, risks, and opportunities for value addition.
  • Identify strategic anchor companies, processors, aggregators, cooperatives, feed companies, veterinary service providers, and off-takers that can support structured livestock financing.
  • Facilitate linkages between livestock producers, input suppliers, veterinary service providers, processors, markets, and financial services.
  • Support development of livestock financing models based on production cycles, herd/flock economics, milk production, meat production, poultry cycles, and other livestock business models.
  • Monitor livestock market trends, livestock and feed prices, disease outbreaks, weather conditions, regulations, market access, and other factors affecting the portfolio.
  • Identify opportunities for livestock value addition, processing, aggregation, cold-chain development, and market expansion.

3. Livestock Production and Technical Support

  • Provide technical guidance on commercially viable livestock production systems and business models.
  • Support farmers and livestock enterprises to improve productivity, profitability, animal husbandry, and business management.
  • Promote good practices in animal nutrition, feed management, breeding, housing, animal health, biosecurity, hygiene, and record keeping.
  • Support adoption of climate-smart livestock practices, including improved feeding systems, water management, pasture management, manure utilization, improved breeds, and resilient production systems.
  • Coordinate with qualified veterinary, livestock extension, and technical partners where specialized animal health or production interventions are required.
  • Promote improved farm and livestock records to strengthen financial management and customer bankability.
  • Support farmers to understand the relationship between livestock productivity, cash flows, profitability, and financing requirements.

4. Credit and Portfolio Management

  • Originate quality livestock and agribusiness loan applications in accordance with the Bank’s credit policies.
  • Conduct preliminary assessments of customers’ financial performance, business models, cash flows, repayment capacity, collateral, livestock assets, and production risks.
  • Prepare high-quality credit proposals and supporting documentation for consideration through the Bank’s credit approval processes.
  • Assess livestock-related financing requirements, including working capital, livestock purchase, breeding stock, feed, equipment, dairy infrastructure, poultry houses, ranch development, cold storage, transport, and processing equipment.
  • Monitor financed customers and livestock portfolios to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Monitor Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and proactively initiate remedial actions for stressed accounts.
  • Conduct periodic customer and business visits to assess operational performance, utilization of financing, livestock assets, and repayment capacity.
  • Ensure compliance with credit policies, KYC, AML, environmental and social requirements, and all applicable Bank policies and regulations.
  • Work closely with Credit, Risk, Collections, Legal, Operations, and other relevant functions to manage portfolio risks and resolve account issues.

5. Deposit and Transaction Banking Growth

  • Mobilize deposits from livestock farmers, cooperatives, dairy groups, traders, processors, abattoirs, feed companies, and other livestock value chain actors.
  • Promote appropriate transaction banking and digital payment solutions across livestock value chains.
  • Facilitate digitization and traceability of payments between producers, aggregators, processors, and off-takers.
  • Identify opportunities to increase customer wallet share through relevant banking and financial products.
  • Support efficient collection and disbursement mechanisms for livestock businesses and organized farmer groups.

6. Farmer and Customer Capacity Development

  • Organize livestock farmer and agribusiness sensitization forums on financial literacy, banking products, business management, responsible borrowing, and financial planning.
  • Support farmers and livestock enterprises to develop business plans, financial records, cash-flow projections, and financing proposals.
  • Facilitate training and awareness on good livestock husbandry, animal nutrition, animal health, biosecurity, climate-smart livestock production, and market requirements.
  • Support farmer groups and cooperatives to strengthen governance, record keeping, financial management, and commercial operations.
  • Promote responsible use of agricultural finance and improve customer capacity to manage loan proceeds and repayment obligations.

7. Partnerships and Ecosystem Development

  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships with government livestock authorities, development partners, NGOs, veterinary institutions, research organizations, processors, feed manufacturers, breeders, insurance providers, and off-takers.
  • Build relationships with livestock associations, cooperatives, dairy unions, ranching organizations, and other industry bodies.
  • Support development of blended finance, guarantee, grant, and risk-sharing facilities that can unlock livestock-sector financing.
  • Participate in livestock exhibitions, agricultural shows, field days, farmer forums, trade fairs, and stakeholder meetings representing Equity Bank Tanzania.
  • Maintain an updated database of strategic livestock ecosystem stakeholders and commercial opportunities.

8. Data, Monitoring and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date customer, pipeline, portfolio, and value chain information in the Bank’s approved systems.
  • Track performance against targets for livestock loans, deposits, customer acquisition, portfolio quality, transaction volumes, and farmer/value chain reach.
  • Prepare accurate weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on commercial performance, pipeline development, portfolio quality, customer engagement, risks, and opportunities.
  • Analyse livestock-sector data and market intelligence to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Monitoring & Evaluation and other teams to collect and validate program and commercial performance data.
  • Undertake any other business activities as required by organizational needs.

  • Growth in livestock and agribusiness loans and advances within the assigned portfolio.
  • Growth in deposits and transaction banking revenues from livestock value chain customers.

  • Maintenance of acceptable Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and non-performing loan levels.
  • Growth in the number and value of active livestock agribusiness customers.
  • Growth in farmer, cooperative, aggregator, processor, trader, and off-taker accounts.
  • Number and value of strategic livestock partnerships developed.
  • Number and value of blended finance, guarantee, grant, or risk-sharing opportunities supported.
  • Number of livestock farmers and value chain actors reached, onboarded, and activated.

Experience Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • At least 3–5 years of experience managing livestock/agricultural customers, portfolios, value chains, or livestock development programmes.
  • Demonstrated experience in originating and managing agricultural or livestock loans and/or agribusiness portfolios.
  • Practical experience working with livestock farmers, pastoralists, cooperatives, aggregators, processors, abattoirs, feed companies, off-takers, or livestock MSMEs.
  • Proven experience in livestock production, aggregation, processing, marketing, or value chain development.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing livestock enterprises, preparing business/credit proposals, and evaluating repayment capacity.
  • Experience facilitating access to finance and markets for livestock farmers and agribusinesses.
  • Experience managing livestock-sector risks, including animal disease, climate, market, commodity price, production, and repayment risks.
  • Experience working with government institutions, development partners, financial institutions, and private-sector livestock stakeholders is an advantage.
  • Experience in climate-smart and sustainable livestock production systems is an added advantage.
  • Experience in structured agricultural finance, blended finance, guarantees, or risk-sharing facilities is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated track record of achieving commercial targets and building sustainable customer relationships.

Academic Qualifications and Certifications

  • University degree in Animal Science, Animal Production, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • Professional qualifications in banking, finance, credit, relationship management, project management, or agribusiness are an added advantage.
  • Relevant certifications in livestock production, agricultural value chains, climate-smart agriculture, financial inclusion, credit management, or sustainable finance are desirable.
  • Strong understanding of livestock production systems, animal husbandry, livestock economics, and agribusiness management.
