About EDOTA

Education Outreach Tanzania (EDOTA) is a local not-for-profit NGO that works collaboratively with local and international partners, local communities, local government authorities and other organizations to promote inclusive community development and economic justice.

EDOTA was registered on 26th May 2010, with registration number 00003478, to operate in Mainland Tanzania.

Since its establishment, EDOTA has successfully implemented several funded projects aimed at:

• Enhancing livelihoods.
• Economic strengthening.
• Promoting good governance.
• Conserving the environment.
• Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
• Health promotion.

TNC and EDOTA have been partners since 2020, with EDOTA successfully implementing programmes aimed at strengthening community-led fisheries conservation, enforcement readiness and local conservation in Katavi, Kigoma, Tabora, Geita and Rukwa regions.

Project Overview

The LATABIOCON project addresses critical environmental and socio-economic challenges facing the Lake Tanganyika Basin (LTB), a massive ecosystem covering approximately 223,000 km² and holding one-fifth of Earth’s accessible freshwater. The basin supports more than 12 million people across Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia.

The basin encompasses several government-managed protected areas and internationally recognized Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs).

However, the ecosystem faces significant pressure from:

• Overexploitation of nearshore fish communities.
• Habitat loss.
• Catchment degradation.
• Climate change.
• Persistent lake warming.
• Stronger stratification.
• Expanding low-oxygen zones.
• Erratic rainfall.
• Soil erosion affecting fisheries and rain-fed agriculture.
• Threats to lake-dependent livelihoods.

To address these risks, EDOTA plays a key role within the LaTaBioCoN consortium, leading conservation, socio-economic development and regenerative economy interventions.

EDOTA is responsible for implementing community livelihood interventions that help vulnerable populations adapt to climate and environmental pressures.

The organization also promotes Nature-Based Enterprises (NbEs) to generate environmentally friendly income streams, alongside catchment management strategies aimed at reducing erosion and sediment delivery into critical habitats and facilitating community-led governance among riparian communities.

Position Details

Position Title: Safeguarding, Gender, and Livelihood (SGL) Officer – LaTaBioCoN Project
Reports To: Project Manager
Location: Nguruka Field Office, Kigoma Region
Travel: Project sites in Katavi, Tabora, Rukwa and Geita regions
Position Type: Internship
Duration: 24 months, with the possibility of extension depending on availability of funds

Position Overview

EDOTA is seeking a compassionate, dynamic and strategic Safeguarding, Gender and Livelihood Officer.

This multidisciplinary role will serve as a champion for:

• Social protection.
• Economic empowerment.
• Gender-transformative programming.
• Safeguarding.
• Inclusive livelihoods.

The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and managing safeguarding mechanisms, designing and monitoring gender-equitable interventions, and leading community-level initiatives that expand climate-resilient and biodiversity-positive livelihoods for women, youth and persons with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safeguarding and GBV Mitigation

• Design, implement and monitor project-wide safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) protocols.
• Establish safe, confidential and accessible community reporting channels.
• Conduct Gender-Based Violence (GBV) risk assessments.
• Lead community-level GBV mitigation strategies.

2. Gender Equality and Inclusion Advocacy

• Ensure women and youth are actively included in project design, planning and decision-making processes.
• Promote equal leadership representation within Community-Managed Institutions (CMIs).
• Advocate for enhanced access to financial services for women.

3. Livelihood and Nature-Based Enterprise Development

• Monitor implementation of climate-resilient and biodiversity-positive livelihood interventions.
• Deliver targeted enterprise training for youth to counter unsustainable practices.
• Promote income-generating activities in the fisheries and agriculture sectors.
• Support initiatives designed to close the gender wage gap.

4. Disability Inclusion Mainstreaming

• Proactively advance the integration of persons with disabilities into:
  • Community-led enterprises.
  • Financial service access pipelines.
  • Local governance bodies.

5. Capacity Building and Training

• Conduct regular training sessions for:
  • Project collaborators.
  • Community-Managed Institutions.
  • Local government staff.
  • Community structures.
• Provide training on safeguarding policies, gender mainstreaming and inclusive economic development.

6. Ethical Standards

• Monitor and ensure ethical practices among project workers and collaborators.
• Promote adherence to safeguarding and ethical standards throughout project implementation.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

A University Degree in any of the following fields:

• Gender Studies.
• Social Work.
• Development Studies.
• Human Rights.
• International Development.
• Any related field.

Experience

No prior work experience is required.

Technical Expertise

Candidates should have knowledge of:

• Safeguarding frameworks.
• Case-handling principles.
• Grievance redress mechanisms.
• Ethical standards.
• GBV prevention in rural contexts.
• Inclusive micro-enterprise development.
• Financial inclusion.
• Sustainable agricultural and fisheries livelihood initiatives.
