Job Purpose

The Senior Manager Credit Environmental and Social Risk will provide strategic leadership in identifying, assessing, mitigating, monitoring, and governing Environmental, Social, and Climate (ESC) risks within the Bank’s credit portfolio.

The role is responsible for embedding ESG and climate risk requirements into:

  • Credit policies.
  • Credit systems.
  • Lending processes.
  • Risk management frameworks.

The position ensures compliance with:

  • CRDB Bank policies.
  • Bank of Tanzania regulations.
  • IFC Performance Standards.
  • Equator Principles.
  • Development Finance Institution (DFI) requirements.
  • Sustainability commitments.

The Senior Manager will oversee:

  • Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD).
  • ESG risk monitoring.
  • Climate risk integration.
  • Sustainable finance initiatives.
  • ESG reporting.
  • Capacity building.
  • Stakeholder engagement.

The role safeguards the Bank against environmental, social, climate-related, legal, financial, and reputational risks.


Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Environmental and Social Risk Oversight

  • Provide strategic oversight of Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) for:
    • Lending transactions.
    • Investments.
    • Treasury activities.
    • Structured finance transactions.
  • Review and approve Environmental and Social Risk Assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS).
    • Internal policies.
    • Regulatory requirements.
    • International ESG standards.
  • Assess environmental, social, and climate risks including:
    • Biodiversity.
    • Labour practices.
    • Occupational health and safety.
    • Community health and safety.
    • Human rights.
    • Land acquisition and resettlement.
    • Supply chain risks.
  • Determine appropriate Environmental and Social Risk Categorization.

2. Risk Mitigation and Credit Conditions Management

  • Recommend and oversee implementation of risk mitigation measures including:
    • Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
    • Financing conditions.
    • Monitoring requirements.
    • Corrective action programmes.
    • Environmental and Social Covenants.
    • Representations and warranties in financing agreements.
  • Ensure environmental and social risks are properly managed throughout the credit lifecycle.

3. Portfolio ESG Risk Monitoring and Compliance

  • Lead portfolio-wide environmental and social risk monitoring activities.
  • Conduct and oversee:
    • Site monitoring visits.
    • Portfolio reviews.
    • Compliance verification.
    • Covenant monitoring.
    • ESG report reviews.
    • Audit reviews.
    • Consultant assessments.
    • Incident investigations.
  • Assess ongoing portfolio environmental and social performance.
  • Identify emerging ESG risks and recommend corrective actions.

4. Environmental and Social Incident Management

  • Lead identification, escalation, and resolution of:
    • Environmental incidents.
    • Social risks.
    • Climate-related issues.
    • Compliance breaches.
  • Ensure timely management response to material ESG risks across the portfolio.

5. ESG Risk Management Systems and Reporting

  • Establish and maintain ESG risk management frameworks including:
    • ESG risk registers.
    • Monitoring frameworks.
    • Dashboards.
    • Management information systems.
    • Portfolio analytics tools.
  • Support regulatory and management decision-making through quality ESG data.
  • Lead preparation of:
    • ESG reports.
    • Portfolio monitoring reports.
    • Sustainability dashboards.
    • Regulatory submissions.
    • Development partner reports.
  • Provide ESG risk analysis and recommendations to senior management and governance committees.

6. Climate Risk and Sustainable Finance Integration

  • Integrate:
    • Environmental risks.
    • Social risks.
    • Climate risks.
    • Nature-related risks.

into:

  • Credit risk assessments.
  • Enterprise risk management processes.
  • Climate transition strategies.
  • Resilience programmes.
  • Sustainable finance initiatives.
  • Oversee ESG data management systems and digital solutions.
  • Ensure ESG and climate requirements are integrated into Credit Management Systems.

7. Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

Develop and maintain relationships with:

  • Regulators.
  • Development Finance Institutions (DFIs).
  • Investors.

  • Consultants.
  • Industry associations.

Represent the Bank during:

  • ESG assessments.
  • Regulatory inspections.
  • Sustainability engagements.
  • Due diligence exercises.

8. Consultant Management and Quality Assurance

  • Manage external environmental and social consultants.
  • Ensure quality of:
    • Independent assessments.
    • Portfolio monitoring assignments.

9. Leadership, Training and ESG Culture Development

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop Environmental and Social Risk professionals.
  • Build ESG capability across the organization through:

  • Promote:
    • Responsible banking.
