Job Overview

Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced Senior Mining Engineer to join its team. The role involves leading mine planning and engineering teams, developing integrated mine plans, underground mine design, drill and blast engineering, cost management, and supporting safe and efficient mining operations.

The successful candidate should have extensive underground mining experience, strong mine planning capabilities, and experience in the gold mining industry.

Key Responsibilities

Safety

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership and uphold Barrick’s safety culture.
  • Conduct and record safety interactions with mining crews.
  • Identify workplace hazards and ensure they are rectified or reported.
  • Report workplace incidents and accidents.
  • Complete required risk assessments before performing or assigning tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with mine standard operating procedures for design, planning, and execution.

Mine Design & Planning

  • Lead mining engineers in developing integrated mine plans that maximise value.
  • Deliver accurate and reliable mine designs and layouts on schedule.
  • Develop life-of-mine plans, schedules, cost models, and mine reserves.
  • Conduct cut-off grade analysis and cost modelling.
  • Lead mine design for ventilation and services infrastructure.
  • Review and approve designs, forecasts, and technical deliverables.

Drill & Blast

  • Lead drill and blast design, analysis, and quality control.
  • Develop and lead drill and blast engineers in delivering safe and efficient underground designs.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Geology, Geotechnical, and Survey teams to align technical plans with site execution.

Cost Management

  • Develop and manage operating budgets for underground operations.
  • Prepare capital budgets, AFEs, and purchase requisitions.
  • Conduct monthly cost analysis, KPI tracking, reconciliation, and reporting.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise junior mining engineers in their daily activities.
  • Train and develop graduate engineers to build underground mining competencies.
  • Provide technical and operational support to mining operations leaders.
  • Collaborate with Mineral Resource Management, Open Pit Mining, Processing, and other departments.
  • Promote continuous professional development.
  • Support continuous improvement, risk management, and incident investigations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or Mineral Engineering.
  • Practical experience and/or qualification in project management.
  • Awareness of the Mines Health & Safety Act.

Experience & Competencies

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in mine planning, drill and blast, ventilation, and mining operations.
  • Proven experience developing, optimising, and maintaining long-term and life-of-mine plans.
  • At least 5 years of underground mining experience.
  • Proficiency in mine planning software, preferably Deswik.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a production drill and blast engineer.
  • Experience in the gold mining industry.
  • Strong Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment skills.
  • Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety.
  • Ability to drive manual transmission vehicles.
  • Good knowledge of mining safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Strong performance orientation, work ethic, initiative, and adaptability.
