Position Summary
Barrick Africa and Middle East is seeking a qualified Senior Safety Officer to support the implementation of world-class health and safety standards at the North Mara Gold Mine.
The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of safety programmes, promote a strong safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, conduct risk assessments, investigate incidents, and drive continuous improvement toward Barrick’s Journey to Zero Harm strategy.

Key Responsibilities
Safety Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational safety programmes.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, legal requirements, and industry best practices.
- Promote continuous improvement in workplace safety performance.
Safety Audits & Risk Management
- Conduct routine safety inspections and audits.
- Perform workplace hazard identification and risk assessments.
- Recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure effective hazard management across all operational areas.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, including:
- OSHA requirements
- Fire and Rescue regulations
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards
- Monitor legislative changes and implement required updates.
Safety Leadership
- Drive implementation of Safety Leading Indicators, including:
- Fatal Risk Critical Control Verifications
- Safety Leadership Interactions
- Task Observations
- Risk Management
- Hazard Management
- Safety Training
Training & Awareness
- Design and deliver safety training programmes.
- Conduct new employee safety inductions.
- Organize refresher training sessions.
- Promote safety awareness through campaigns and regular safety meetings.
Incident Investigation
- Lead investigations using:
- ICAM methodology
- 5 WHY analysis
- Identify root causes.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure implementation of lessons learned.
Risk Reduction
- Identify operational risks relating to:
- Mining equipment
- Process plants
- Hazardous chemicals
- Environmental conditions
- Develop and implement effective risk mitigation measures.
Journey to Zero Harm
- Ensure all departments actively implement the Journey to Zero roadmap.
- Work closely with departmental Heads to strengthen safety performance.
Emergency Preparedness
- Develop emergency response plans for incidents such as:
- Fires
- Chemical spills
- Mine collapses
- Conduct emergency drills.
- Ensure emergency equipment is regularly inspected and maintained.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Safety inspections
- Incident investigations
- Training programmes
- Risk assessments
- Prepare safety performance reports for senior management.
- Recommend continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- Bachelor’s Degree, Advanced Diploma, or an equivalent qualification.
Professional Certifications (Preferred)
One or more of the following:
- NEBOSH
- IOSH
- Other recognized Occupational Health and Safety certifications
Experience
Applicants should have:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in occupational safety management within:
- Mining
- Heavy industry
- Practical experience in:
- Underground mining
- Open pit mining
- Mineral processing plants
- Good driving competence within a mining environment.
- Broad exposure to different mining operational activities.

About North Mara Gold Mine
The North Mara Gold Mine is located in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately:
- 100 km east of Lake Victoria
- 20 km south of the Kenya border
The operation consists of:
- Gokona Underground Mine
- Nyabirama Open Pit Mine
The processing plant has the capacity to process approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
