Job Purpose
The Senior Technical Specialist, Mine Geology will provide technical leadership and governance across mine geology systems, processes and projects supporting both open-pit and underground mining.
The role will ensure that geological data, modelling and reconciliation workflows are accurate, reliable, efficient and aligned with operational and business value, ensuring that ore is properly defined, mined, tracked and reconciled.
The position will optimise data-supported decision-making by integrating advanced geoscience principles and systems management to achieve optimal plant-feed blending and maximum ore recovery. The role will also drive continuous improvement in geological workflows, maintain the integrity of key software and data platforms, and support informed decision-making through high-quality analysis and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Geological Systems and Technical Leadership
- Provide technical leadership for geological systems and processes supporting open-pit and underground mine geology.
- Ensure high-quality geological data analysis, interpretation and 3D geological modelling to underpin accurate ore definition and production tracking.
- Support and maintain Mine-to-Mill reconciliation processes to ensure material is accurately defined, correctly routed, optimally blended for plant feed and reliably reconciled.
- Develop, maintain and improve geological systems, models and data workflows, including drill plods, ore tracking, reconciliation and modelling workflows.
- Administer and maintain geological and production tracking software platforms, including oversight of licensing and coordination with external service providers.
- Analyse geological, operational and reconciliation data to support effective decision-making and identify system gaps, inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
- Provide high-quality analysis and reporting that is robust, timely and aligned with operational requirements.
- Plan, prioritise and execute technical projects and initiatives within complex geological and operational environments.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
- Engage effectively with stakeholders across geology, mining, processing and other departments to strengthen geological capability and workflow effectiveness.
- Initiate discussions on matters relating to Mine-to-Mill reconciliations with key stakeholders, including Process, Mining Technical Services and Mining Production.
- Liaise with ABU and other corporate functions when technical support is required.
Team Leadership and Development
- Mentor and coach geology staff to support capability development and improve technical performance.
- Assign and delegate tasks to subordinates with clear intent, timeframe and resources where applicable.
- Develop work plans and translate implementation requirements to subordinates.
- Perform personal effectiveness appraisals and reviews for subordinates.
- Support team building, coaching and development of subordinates, including identifying unrealised opportunities and development needs.
- Review, recognise and recommend subordinates for reward or promotion based on performance.
- Ensure all work reflects AngloGold Ashanti values, especially safety, integrity, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Professional Qualification
- BSc (Hons) in Geology.
- Registration with a recognised professional body.
- Must be a Tanzanian citizen.
Experience
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in the mining industry.
- At least 5 years of experience in mineral resource evaluation, particularly for gold deposits.
- Proven project management and team supervision experience.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of Mine-to-Mill reconciliation processes.
- Advanced ability in geological data analysis, interpretation and 3D geological modelling.
- Competence in computer-aided geological software, including:
- Datamine
- Leapfrog
- Geovariance Isatis
- Proficiency in production tracking data platforms such as Connected Mine or similar systems.
- Competence in data analytics tools, including:
- Power BI
- SQL Server
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Understanding of drilling, sampling, grade control and resource evaluation workflows.
- Technical understanding of geometallurgical proxies and ore performance characteristics.
- Ability to develop, maintain and improve geological systems, processes and models.
- Strong capability in software administration, licensing oversight and coordination with external service providers.
- Skill in managing data workflows, including drill plods, ore tracking, reconciliation and modelling.
- Ability to analyse geological, operational and reconciliation data to guide decision-making.
- Ability to diagnose system gaps and inefficiencies and develop continuous improvement solutions.
- Ability to make sound and timely technical decisions in complex geological and operational environments.
- Strong understanding of value drivers in mining and how geological systems support operational performance.
