Job Summary

The SME Banker is responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of Business Banking (Enterprise/SME) customers in Mwanza. The role focuses on building strong client relationships, delivering efficient service, and driving portfolio growth through lending, cross-selling, and business development.

Primary objective:
Maximize sustainable risk-adjusted portfolio contribution (EP contribution).


Key Responsibilities

1. Sales & Customer Relationship Management (70%)

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of SME/business banking clients
  • Conduct annual and interim reviews of customer credit facilities
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities
  • Cross-sell banking products and services to existing clients
  • Provide financial and business advisory support to clients
  • Resolve customer complaints effectively and professionally
  • Negotiate pricing, service standards, and relationship terms
  • Maintain strong customer engagement and relationship management

2. Business Development & Portfolio Growth

  • Identify and develop target lists for potential clients
  • Assess customer potential using prioritization guidelines
  • Drive acquisition of new SME customers
  • Coordinate marketing and outreach initiatives
  • Work with internal teams to expand customer relationships across the Group
  • Ensure delivery of sales targets

3. Credit & Risk Management

  • Gather and analyze information for credit applications
  • Conduct risk assessments and manage credit exposure
  • Monitor portfolio quality using sanction conditions and risk triggers
  • Manage early warning accounts to reduce credit risk
  • Ensure compliance with BB RMCD guidelines
  • Support credit decision-making with judgmental inputs

4. Business Management & Compliance (25%)

  • Monitor portfolio performance and risk exposure
  • Ensure adherence to bank policies and procedures
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and internal standards
  • Support crisis management when required
  • Stay updated on regulatory and industry changes
  • Provide input on balancing risk and reward decisions

5. Relationship & Stakeholder Management

  • Build long-term relationships with business owners and financial decision-makers
  • Communicate effectively with corporate clients and internal teams
  • Coordinate with product specialists for complex solutions
  • Ensure strong service delivery across all customer touchpoints

Minimum Education

Role Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years relationship-building experience preferred
