Job Purpose

The Specialist Underwriting will support the development of insurance business by ensuring prudent underwriting, timely policy administration, and satisfactory client servicing within the assigned business line.

The role will also support the department in achieving its desired KPIs while ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct daily reconciliation of all collections and premium accounts.
• Ensure that all disbursed loans have appropriate insurance arrangements in place.
• Provide technical support to branches in the provision of insurance products and services, including system underwriting and insurance bookings.
• Follow up on monthly declaration schedules from bank units.
• Analyze insurance quotations and policies from insurance companies and negotiate with underwriters to identify the most suitable insurance solutions for clients at the best available price.
• Guide designated insurance personnel in business booking through the system, from branch level to zonal level.
• Provide timely underwriting training to the team and branches within the assigned area of responsibility to improve performance.
• Assist the Manager, Operations & Compliance, in preparing reports and work with the management team as required.
• Assist in coordinating customer relations issues with the Customer Experience team and ensure that customer queries are responded to within the agreed SLA.
• Build and maintain ongoing relationships with clients, including scheduling and attending meetings and understanding the nature of clients’ businesses or personal insurance needs for Head Office-based clients, and assisting zonal teams wherever required.
• Participate in the development of digital platforms, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and other initiatives undertaken by the unit.
• Attend to daily issues and queries raised with insurers regarding underwriting and provide the necessary clarifications.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with underwriters to achieve continuous and sound business relationships.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university.
• At least two (2) years of work experience, with at least one year served in a reputable institution in a closely related or similar role within the insurance industry.
• Insurance qualification with a minimum qualification of Certificate of Proficiency (COP).
• Thorough knowledge of underwriting and insurance service-related processes.
• Strong underwriting capability with sound decision-making and negotiation skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good understanding of insurance market procedures and regulatory requirements.
• High level of computer literacy, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
