Job Overview
Barrick Mining Corporation is seeking a Technical Trainer – Open Cast (OC) to deliver, assess and verify technical, operational and safety-related training for Open Cast Mining personnel.
The role focuses on developing employee and contractor competencies, supporting mobile equipment operator progression, conducting competency assessments, maintaining training records and promoting safety, compliance and operational excellence.
The Technical Trainer will work closely with the Training Coordinator – OC, supervisors and subject matter experts to strengthen workforce capability and competency management.
Key Responsibilities
Training Delivery
- Deliver technical and operational training to Open Cast employees and contractors.
- Conduct classroom, practical, field-based and on-the-job training.
- Deliver new employee induction and role-specific training.
- Facilitate equipment, operational and safety training.
- Support learning pathways and development programmes.
- Adapt training methods to workforce and operational requirements.
- Promote safe working practices through effective training.
Competency Assessment & Verification
- Conduct competency assessments and workplace observations.
- Verify employees’ practical skills, knowledge and operational capabilities.
- Collect and maintain assessment evidence.
- Recommend competency sign-off and operator authorisations.
- Participate in reassessments and refresher competency programmes.
- Ensure assessments comply with company and regulatory requirements.
Mobile Equipment Operator Development
- Deliver training on mobile mining equipment.
- Conduct equipment familiarisation and upgrade training.
- Coach trainee operators through structured development pathways.
- Support progression from trainee to competent operator.
- Monitor operator performance and provide feedback.
- Assist in developing operator capability improvement plans.
Compliance & Safety Training
- Deliver mandatory safety and critical-risk training.
- Support implementation of operational standards and procedures.
- Ensure personnel understand site rules and safe working practices.
- Assist with permit-related and critical-risk training.
- Monitor completion of mandatory training.
- Support audit and compliance requirements.
Learning Resource Development
- Develop training presentations, guides, assessments and practical exercises.
- Review and update learning materials when operational requirements change.
- Develop SOP-based training resources.
- Support digital learning and Damstra LMS initiatives.
- Standardise training content across departments.
- Work with subject matter experts to improve training effectiveness.
Training Records & Documentation
- Maintain training attendance and assessment records.
- Submit assessment evidence and competency documentation.
- Maintain learner progress records.
- Ensure training documentation is completed within required timelines.
- Maintain accurate data in Damstra and other learning systems.
- Ensure training records are audit-ready.
Coaching & Workforce Development
- Coach operators on workplace applications and best practices.
- Provide one-on-one support to trainees and developing operators.
- Help supervisors identify competency gaps.
- Support workforce capability improvement initiatives.
- Promote continuous learning and operational excellence.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve training effectiveness.
- Participate in training reviews, audits and improvement initiatives.
- Provide feedback on competency standards and training programmes.
- Support training for new technologies and equipment.
- Contribute to departmental capability-building objectives.
- Promote Barrick’s learning culture and operational excellence principles.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Promote and reinforce employees’ Duty of Care responsibilities.
- Ensure critical controls are implemented for tasks involving fatal risks.
- Maintain a safe working environment and ensure appropriate tools are available.
- Ensure compliance with North Mara Gold Mine safe-work practices and procedures.
- Ensure incidents and accidents are reported immediately.
- Complete at least 14 safety interactions per week.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation and site-specific requirements.
- Achieve weekly safety-interaction targets.
- Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures.
- Participate in incident and accident investigations.
- Participate in safety-management and toolbox meetings.
- Ensure required work permits, FLRA and WPI checks are completed properly.
- Ensure personnel are appropriately trained and ticketed for designated tasks.
- Enforce safe work practices and procedures.
- Take immediate action to address unsafe workplace conditions and hazards.
- Conduct relevant workplace inspections.
- Support achievement of safety and production targets.
- Ensure compliance with mine planning, design and profile standards.
- Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are accurately completed where no SOP exists.
- Identify, rectify or report hazards along routes and within assigned working areas.
Environmental Management System (EMS) Responsibilities
The role also involves supporting the effectiveness of the Environmental Management System by:
- Taking accountability for EMS effectiveness within the area of responsibility.
- Supporting environmental policy and objective implementation.
- Ensuring required EMS resources are available.
- Communicating the importance of effective environmental management.
- Supporting achievement of intended EMS outcomes.
- Encouraging employees to contribute to EMS effectiveness.
- Promoting continual improvement.
- Supporting management leadership in environmental responsibilities.

The North Mara Gold Mine is located in the Tarime District of Tanzania’s Mara Region, approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
The mine commenced commercial production in 2002 and operates as a combined open-pit and underground mine, comprising the Gokona underground deposit and Nyabirama open-pit deposit. Its processing plant has capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
