Underground Mechanical Superintendent

Position Overview
The Barrick North Mara Team is seeking to recruit an Underground Mechanical Superintendent to lead and manage underground maintenance engineering operations.
This role focuses on ensuring efficient maintenance planning, cost control, safety compliance, and optimal performance of underground fixed plant assets while fostering a strong safety culture and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Planning & Operations
- Ensure all underground fixed plant maintenance activities are effectively planned and scheduled
- Optimize maintenance strategies for critical plant assets
- Monitor downtime and conduct defect elimination and performance improvement initiatives
- Ensure efficient use of maintenance resources (planned vs. unplanned work, backlog management, schedule compliance)
Cost Control & Performance Management
- Manage departmental cost performance, including forecasting and variance analysis
- Apply zero-based budgeting principles in annual budget preparation
- Report monthly and year-to-date downtime and performance metrics
- Conduct monthly performance reviews covering safety, cost, availability, and utilization
Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)
- Promote and enforce compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies
- Provide a safe working environment through proper systems, procedures, and supervision
- Conduct safety inspections and address hazards
- Participate in incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership in the field
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and supervise maintenance teams and contractors
- Ensure staff are competent, trained, and qualified before commencing work
- Conduct performance evaluations and support employee development
- Communicate key initiatives and performance updates to all crews
Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Ensure effective implementation of the environmental management system
- Promote environmental policies aligned with organizational strategy
- Support continuous improvement in environmental performance
- Ensure availability of resources for EMS implementation
- Communicate the importance of environmental compliance across teams
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Foster teamwork and cross-departmental collaboration
- Support process improvements and system optimization
- Reprioritize work when necessary to meet operational demands
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent trade qualification
- Tertiary engineering qualification (essential)
- Valid driving license
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience
- At least 5 years in a managerial role
- Experience in underground mining operations (fixed plant experience is an advantage)
- Experience working in Africa or remote environments is an added advantage
