Job Summary

The Light Vehicle Mechanic will be responsible for carrying out mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and fault-finding on light vehicles and plant equipment. The role also involves tire-shop activities, safety compliance, equipment inspections, and supporting maximum equipment availability.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Carry out mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on light vehicles and plant equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform corrective maintenance to resolve equipment breakdowns.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and ensure maintenance compliance.
  • Conduct equipment upgrades and modifications as required.
  • Remove and replace pump components.
  • Carry out gearbox and engine overhaul activities.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed according to approved standards and procedures.
  • Follow up on outstanding maintenance and repair work.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Attend compulsory safety training, meetings, and other required programs.
  • Use the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct pre-start checks and safety inspections.
  • Ensure proper equipment isolation procedures are followed.
  • Comply with working-at-height and confined-space procedures.
  • Report incidents and accidents promptly.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards.

Tire Shop Activities

  • Perform daily tire-shop activities, including changing vehicle tires.
  • Strip and assemble light vehicle tires.
  • Operate tire handlers and tire service trucks safely.
  • Ensure the tire shop remains clean and organized.
  • Ensure suitable spare tires are available for breakdown situations.

Work Management & Reporting

  • Use work instructions, job sheets, and job specifications to determine job requirements and resources.
  • Identify and inspect appropriate tools and equipment before use.
  • Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Light Vehicle Supervisor regarding equipment conditions.
  • Keep supervisors and relevant stakeholders informed about equipment availability.
  • Ensure work orders and resource requirements are properly completed.
  • Participate in training and development activities.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to less experienced personnel when required.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • Secondary education.
  • Diesel Mechanics Trade Certification, Full Technician’s Certificate (FTC), or VETA Grade One.
  • Technical/vocational training, apprenticeship, or on-the-job training.
  • FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Valid Tanzania Class D driving licence.
  • Class F driving licence will be an added advantage.

Experience & Competencies

  • 2–3 years of experience in a maintenance role involving diesel mechanics.
  • Previous mining industry experience is essential.
  • Experience working in a light vehicle workshop.
  • Good knowledge of vehicle mechanics and tires.
  • Experience in light vehicle fault finding.
  • Experience with gearbox and engine overhauls.
  • Ability to provide vehicle maintenance and technical support with minimal supervision.
  • Good physical strength and stamina.
  • Strong time management and planning skills.
  • Good analytical and logical-thinking abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to conduct safety inspections and identify hazards.
  • Good vision and ability to distinguish colours and symbols.
