Objective Of The Role

The Specialist – Exploration Geologist is responsible for planning, coordinating and executing Greenfield exploration programmes that evaluate geological targets and test exploration concepts across the company’s exploration projects in Tanzania.

Operating in a roster-based field environment, the role works closely with the Senior Geologist and Exploration Manager to deliver exploration programmes safely, sustainably and within approved technical, budgetary and scheduling parameters.

The incumbent provides technical leadership during field operations, supervises exploration contractors and field support personnel, contributes to target generation and geological interpretation, and ensures exploration data is collected, managed and reported in accordance with recognised company standards.

The role typically delivers outcomes over a six- to nine-month planning horizon while contributing to exploration objectives extending up to one year.

Role Accountabilities

A. Technical

  • Plan, design and execute exploration programmes that test geological concepts and exploration targets using sound geological principles and industry best practice.
  • Develop technically robust work programmes with clearly defined objectives, targeting rationale, milestones and decision points.
  • Contribute to target generation, geological interpretation and the continuous refinement of exploration models.
  • Supervise geological mapping, sampling, drilling support and other exploration activities to ensure technical integrity.
  • Ensure geological information is accurately collected, validated and incorporated into exploration databases.
  • Maintain high-quality geological maps, plans, cross-sections and technical documentation.
  • Implement and monitor geological quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programmes to maintain data integrity.
  • Protect the security and confidentiality of geological samples, analytical results and commercially sensitive exploration information.

B. Operational

  • Coordinate daily exploration activities to ensure approved work programmes are delivered safely, efficiently and within agreed timeframes and budgets.
  • Supervise contractors and field support personnel to ensure work complies with approved technical specifications, company standards and contractual requirements.
  • Coordinate field logistics with relevant support functions to ensure personnel, equipment, camp facilities and access requirements are available to support exploration activities.
  • Monitor programme progress and recommend operational improvements to maximise exploration efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support the preparation, monitoring and control of exploration work programmes and operational budgets.

C. Safety, Health, Environment And Community

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership by promoting a proactive safety culture across all exploration activities.
  • Ensure exploration programmes comply with Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) standards, legislative requirements and company procedures.
  • Identify operational hazards, assess risks and implement effective control measures.
  • Ensure incidents, hazards and near misses are reported promptly and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Promote environmentally responsible exploration practices and support positive relationships with local communities and stakeholders.
  • Recommend improvements to safety systems, operational procedures and field practices to enhance overall performance.

D. Planning, Reporting And Communication

  • Support the Senior Geologist and Exploration Manager in developing annual and project-specific exploration work programmes and budgets.
  • Prepare accurate and timely technical reports, presentations, geological maps, plans and cross-sections for management, joint venture partners and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Monitor exploration performance against approved work plans and communicate progress, technical findings, risks and emerging opportunities.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal support functions to ensure efficient execution of exploration activities.

E. Governance, Compliance And Risk Management

  • Ensure exploration activities comply with applicable legislation, exploration licences, permits and statutory obligations.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, standards, internal controls and governance requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, Environment and Community legislation and applicable corporate governance requirements, including internal control frameworks where applicable.
  • Monitor expenditure against approved budgets and promote responsible utilisation of company resources.
  • Uphold the company’s Values, Code of Conduct and ethical standards in all activities.

Role Requirements

Education And Qualifications

  • BSc, BSc Hons or MSc in Geology.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant exploration experience, typically with more than 7 years preferred.
  • Experience supervising field teams and contractors on work-related safety issues and exploration activities.
  • Practical field experience developing quality exploration targets and effective work programmes and proposals.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Proficiency in exploration practices and techniques, including:
    • Geochemistry
    • Structural geology
    • Geological mapping
    • GIS
    • Sampling methods
    • Drilling
    • Geophysical interpretation
  • Ability to critically assess research conclusions and make recommendations for their application in the exploration process.
  • Ability to apply modelling and analytical systems, tools and skills to develop and test an understanding of targets and deposits.
  • Practical technical skills to develop quality exploration targets and proposals to test geological concepts.
  • Basic understanding of the gold mining industry, including mining, metallurgy, resources and reserves, and geotechnical engineering.
  • Awareness of local culture and community aspects, required approvals and land access arrangements.
  • Ability to manage safety, health and environmental requirements in the workplace.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Medically fit to work in remote locations with limited medical facilities.
  • Valid driver’s licence and proficiency in operating 4WD vehicles.
  • Advanced working knowledge of GIS and other exploration software.
