Job Description
The Barrick Africa Middle East Team is seeking to recruit a High Voltage (HV) Electrician to join the Engineering Gold Plant Electrical team at North Mara Gold Mine.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and inspection of high-voltage electrical systems and equipment within the mining and processing plant environment.
Key Responsibilities
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure safe work practices by attending compulsory safety courses and meetings.
- Use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report incidents and accidents promptly.
- Ensure full compliance with Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental, and other company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) when performing Lock-Out, Tag-Out, Try-Out (LOTOTO).
- Ensure all electrical maintenance and repair work complies with approved safety procedures.
- Ensure compliance with mine safety standards and statutory requirements.
Electrical Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Monitor and assess plant and electrical equipment.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair industrial control systems using root-cause problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Perform high-voltage switching and operate generators in accordance with approved operating procedures.
- Install, repair, and trace faults on HV switchgear and protection relays.
- Install and wire HV electrical devices.
- Install, repair, and troubleshoot variable speed drives (VSDs).
- Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot three-phase motor starters and protective devices.
- Perform transformer installation and maintenance.
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on HV equipment.
- Diagnose and rectify electrical faults in plant and HV distribution systems.
- Inspect and maintain substations, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and associated equipment.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and prioritize repairs as required.
- Participate in electrical emergency response and troubleshooting activities.
- Support planned shutdowns, commissioning, testing, and energization of electrical equipment.
Inspection and Preventive Maintenance
- Conduct scheduled equipment inspections on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Report identified defects within the relevant shift and in accordance with applicable SOPs.
- Ensure compliance with equipment preventive maintenance schedules.
- Inspect and maintain power tools and hand tools.
- Ensure measuring and testing instruments are inspected before use.
- Ensure equipment is calibrated according to OEM schedules or when required.
- Interpret and use OEM manuals when maintaining and repairing equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and switching records.
- Ensure all equipment and tools are stored and used safely and correctly.
High-Voltage Operations
- Perform safe operation, switching, isolation, and restoration of HV electrical systems.
- Carry out switching according to approved switching procedures and electrical safety requirements.
- Maintain and troubleshoot HV distribution systems.
- Inspect and maintain HV substations and switch rooms.
- Work with HV switchgear, transformers, protection systems, cable systems, busbars, isolators, earthing switches, and circuit breakers.
- Ensure electrical systems provide a reliable power supply to plant operations.
Cost and Operational Efficiency
- Optimize electrical maintenance costs by ensuring expenditure remains within budget.
- Support reduction of wastage.
- Repair components where practical before replacing them.
- Ensure assigned electrical tasks are completed efficiently and to the required standards.
Teamwork
- Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure reliable plant power supply.
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments.
- Participate in emergency electrical response and planned maintenance activities.

Qualification Requirements
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering (NTA Level Four) or a trade equivalent from a recognized college.
- Electrical Trade Certification, Full Technician’s Certificate, VETA Grade One, or IMTT NTA Level Three in Electrical Engineering.
- Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.
- Valid Tanzania Driving License.
- Certificate in HV switching and operation.
Experience and Competencies
Applicants should have:
- 2–3 years of experience in an electrical maintenance role.
- Demonstrated electrical experience with processing plant equipment.
- Proven experience working in mining, process plants, or heavy industrial environments.
- Experience working with electrical equipment in:
- Process plants
- Water Treatment Plants (WTP)
- Filtration plants
- Brine plants
- Electrical substations
- HV/LV switchgear systems
- Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
- Soft starters
- Generators
- RMUs
Technical Skills and Competencies
Practical experience should include:
- High-voltage substations and distribution systems.
- HV switchgear, including Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCB) and SF₆ circuit breakers.
- HV switching and isolation procedures.
- Safe switching techniques and electrical switching programs.
- Electrical isolation, Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), and permit-to-work systems.
- Transformer operation, inspection, and maintenance.
- Protection systems, relays, and electrical control circuits, including SEPAM and SEL relays.
- HV cable systems, termination, testing, and fault finding.
- Busbars, isolators/disconnectors, earthing switches, and circuit breakers.
- Electrical fault finding, troubleshooting, and corrective maintenance.
- Preventive and predictive maintenance of HV equipment.
- Inspection and maintenance of substations and switch rooms.
- Electrical testing and commissioning.
- Emergency response to electrical faults and power-system failures.
- PLC and SCADA systems.
- RMU switching and installation.
- Generator systems and GSM technologies.
- Overhead and underground transmission lines.
- Variable Speed Drives, including ABB and WEG systems.
- Reading and interpreting electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and schematics.
- Compliance with electrical safety procedures, mine safety standards, and statutory requirements.
