African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-political, non-religious, and non-profit organization that provides technical and operational support, including supply chain, logistics, and infrastructure services, in collaboration with relief and development partners operating in disaster-affected, poverty-stricken, and development-focused areas.

AIRD works with UN agencies, international donors, national organizations, and governments.

Job Summary

The Mechanic will be responsible for preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and minor to major repairs of vehicles and machinery in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and organizational standards.

The position will help ensure fleet reliability, safety, and operational readiness while complying with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards, environmental protection requirements, and AIRD policies.

The role is primarily workshop-based, with occasional field response to vehicle breakdowns. The successful candidate may be required to work extended hours, weekends, or respond to emergencies depending on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

1. Vehicle & Machinery Maintenance

• Carry out minor and major repairs, servicing, and preventive maintenance of vehicles and machinery as instructed by the Senior Workshop Foreman.
• Diagnose mechanical faults accurately and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities meet manufacturers’ specifications and organizational quality standards.
• Conduct pre- and post-repair inspections to confirm roadworthiness and operational safety of vehicles.
• Support emergency breakdown response when required.

2. Tools, Parts & Workshop Management

• Ensure safe keeping, labeling, and protection of dismantled vehicle or machine parts during repair works.
• Maintain proper use, cleanliness, and safe storage of tools, workshop equipment, and machinery.
• Immediately report lost, damaged, or malfunctioning tools and equipment to the Senior Workshop Foreman.
• Support inventory control of spare parts by ensuring proper handling and minimizing wastage.

3. Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Compliance

• Comply fully with OSH regulations and AIRD safety policies at all times.
• Properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure safe working practices within the workshop.
• Identify, report, and mitigate workplace hazards, near-misses, or unsafe conditions.
• Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and OSH trainings as required.
• Ensure vehicles are not released for operation if they pose safety risks.

4. Environmental Protection & Waste Management

• Promote environmentally responsible workshop practices in line with organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, including used oils, lubricants, batteries, filters, metal scraps, and cleaning materials.
• Prevent oil spills, fuel leaks, and environmental contamination; report and address incidents promptly.
• Support recycling and waste reduction initiatives where applicable.

5. Documentation & Reporting

• Accurately complete job cards, maintenance logs, service records, and repair reports.
• Provide timely feedback to the Supervisor on repair status, parts requirements, and recurring faults.
• Support fleet data collection for maintenance planning and performance monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should have:

• Certificate or Diploma in Auto-Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, generators, and machinery.
• Experience in the repair and maintenance of:
  • Heavy-duty trucks
  • Buses
  • Generators
  • Heavy-duty machinery
• Experience obtained from the humanitarian sector will be an added advantage.
